Problem (Abstract)
This document contains a list of recommended IPDS Port Number Values for *LAN IPDS printer device descriptions depending on the type of network interface or print server being used with your printer.
Resolving the problem
This document contains a list of recommended IPDS Port Number Values for *LAN IPDS printer device descriptions, depending on the type of network interface or print server being used with your printer.
The Port number (PORT) parameter specifies which TCP/IP port to use when printing operating system spooled files from an IBM System i system through a *LAN IPDS device description to a printer on a Local Area Network (LAN) or Wide Area Network (WAN). Therefore, the specified TCP/IP port must be open on any firewalls, routers, or SOCK servers used between the System i and the printer. If the specified TCP/IP port is closed, the printer writer for the *LAN IPDS device description will be not be able to open a connection with the printer and will, therefore, not be able to print to that printer.
Hardware Requirements for *LAN IPDS Device Descriptions
There is no guarantee that printers that support *LAN 3812 PJL or *LAN 3812 SNMP device descriptions will also support IPDS (or vice-versa). For a *LAN IPDS device description to work, the following hardware requirements must be met:
1. | The printer connected using this print driver must have the IBM IPDS feature or an OEM IPDS SIMM (Single Inline Memory Module) installed in the printer hardware, or must be attached to an external print server that converts an IPDS printer data stream to an ASCII printer data stream (such as HP PCL or Adobe PostScript). Note: If the printer has an internal IPDS feature or IPDS SIMM installed, a printer configuration page (generated from the printer itself) will typically indicate that IPDS is installed. |
2. | If the printer has an internal IPDS feature or IPDS SIMM installed, an internal print server or network interface card (NIC) must be used as well. The Intelligent Printer Data Stream (IPDS) data stream will not work through a printer's parallel or serial interface. |
3. | Some IPDS print servers, such as the iData LAN Brick (also known as an IBM 7913), allow a single IPDS Twinax attached printers to be connected to an Ethernet or token-ring LAN. |
- List of Recommended Port Number Values for *LAN IPDS Device Descriptions
Notes:
1. The port number value is dependent on the print server, sometimes called a LAN adapter or Network Interface (NIC) card, not the printer hardware. If the printer has an internal print server, you may need to contact the manufacturer of your printer or your printer vendor to find out the model of print server used. 2. - Configuring the Printer and Print Server Hardware
The success of *LAN IPDS device descriptions is dependent on the configuration settings on the operating system and on the printer and print server hardware. For more information about configuring the time-out values on the printer and print server hardware and common error messages that you can receive when printing through a *LAN IPDS device description, please refer to the following document:

- Information Concerning IBM Infoprint, InfoPrint Solutions and Lexmark IPDS Laser Printers
Note: In most cases port 9600 has better connectivity than port 9100 for IBM Infoprint 1100, 1200, 1300, 1400 and 1500 Series printers. However, some newer IBM Infoprint and InfoPrint printers may use port 9600 for unsecure IPDS connections and port 5001 for secure IPDS connections. Also, port 9100 is no longer supported starting with the InfoPrint 1800 Series printers, due to communication failures experienced using that port. Therefore, port 5001 or port 9600 should be used instead of port 9100 for InfoPrint 1800 Series printers and for any newer InfoPrint printers to come.
If error message PQT3621 - The session with device &8 ended abnormally, occurs after printing about 100 pages of a spooled file, and the failing printer is an IBM Infoprint 1xxx Series printer, and InfoPrint 1xxx Series printer or a Lexmark laser printer, try using the following steps to use port 9600 rather than port 9100. If the printer will not print at all after going through these steps, then switch back to port 9100. The steps are:
1. End the writer, if it is not already ended. 2. Vary off the printer device description. 3. Change the IPDS Timeout setting in the printer hardware from "Host controlled" to 15 (seconds). This setting is found in the IPDS MENU on the IBM Infoprint 1100 or 1200 Series printer or Lexmark Optra printer. 4. Change the IPDS Port setting in the printer hardware from 9100 to 9600. This setting is also found in the IPDS MENU on the IBM Infoprint 1100 or 1200 Series printer or Lexmark Optra printer.
Note: The IPDS Port setting is not available for all models of IBM Infoprint 1100 or 1200 or Lexmark Optra printers. If this setting is not found, skip this step and proceed to the next step.5. Change the Port number (PORT) parameter in the *LAN IPDS device description from 9100 to 9600 to match the change in the printer hardware. 6. Vary the printer device description back on. 7. Start the writer.
