The table below specifies first print time objectives:
First Print Time from Standby(1)(2): Mono <15.0 sec.
Color <15.0 sec.
First Print Time from Power Saver(1)(2): Mono <90.0 sec.
Color <90.0 sec.
Note: (1) All first print times are measured for 4800CQ simplex printing on letter sized paper. The test job consists of a single page of simple text (approximately 20% coverage). The First print time is defined as the elapsed time from hitting enter on the PC keyboard to the page exiting to the output bin. All tests will pick paper from the default primary input tray and the page will exit into the default primary output bin.
Note: (2) Times may be longer if an automatic calibration is required.
Print Quality
General Statement on Print Quality
During the life of the printer, components are subject to wear based on usage. Printers continuously operating at or near the maximum duty cycle may require service for replacement of these components to ensure high quality printing and good performance throughout the life of the printer.
Customer-replaceable maintenance items are recommended every 200,000 pages for the fuser and 120,000 pages for the ITU.
Automatic Calibration
The Infoprint Color 1664 MFP performs an automatic calibration under the following conditions:
- At power on
- After 8 hours of Power Saver
- Every 500 pages
- After changing a print cartridge
- After changing an intermediate transfer unit.
A manual calibration can be initiated by selecting "Color Adjust" from the Color Menu.
Print Quality Settings
- 4800CQ (default) (full printer speed)
- 1200 x 1200 dpi (reduced printer speed)
Color and Black & White Printer Controls
The Infoprint Color 1664 MFP will offer several controls that will allow the user or Printer / Network Administrators to direct the preferred output to be Color or Black & White.
Driver
A choice to print a color job in black & white is available in Infoprint Color 1664 MFP Drivers. Note that the drivers for Infoprint Color 1664 MFP are branded Infoprint Color 1664. Printing jobs in color is the default setting.
Infoprint Color 1664 MFP will offer a Black only driver (Windows NT 4.0, XP, 2000, Windows Server 2003) that will allow Printer / Network Administrators to limit the printing from some workstations to black and white only.
Op Panel
Print Mode
Allows users not utilizing an Infoprint Color 1664 MFP Driver to print a color job in black & white by selecting Black & White from the menu. The selections are Color (default setting) and Black & White. "Print Mode" is located under the Color Menu. These Op panel selections are ignored when using an Infoprint Color 1664 MFP Driver for Windows.
Printer Usage
Printer Usage modes are set to control the starting position of the Intermediate Transfer Unit (ITU) and how the printer software controls its position depending on the color content of the print job and/or the Infoprint Color 1664 MFP Driver or "Print Mode" selection. There are two selections: Max Speed and Max Yield (default setting). "Printer Usage" is located under the Setup Menu.
Processing a significant number of black pages with the ITU engaged may reduce the life of the color photoconductors and may affect the ultimate life of the color print cartridges (the photoconductor is an integral part of the cartridge).
Maximum print speed is obtained when the Driver and Print Mode are set to color (default settings) and Printer Usage is set to Max Speed. Any other selections can reduce throughput depending on the job content and the selection. It takes approximately one second to lower the ITU and approximately six seconds to raise it. The following table summarizes the effect of selections on the ITU movement.

Black & White Lock
This feature allows Printer/Network Administrators to "lock" the Infoprint Color 1664 MFP in a mode that will only print black & white with the ITU disengaged. This feature can not be overridden with any other menu or driver selection. "Black and White Lock" is located under the Setup Menu.
Print Permissions
Print Permissions allows customers to configure the Infoprint Color 1664 MFP to only print color for certain approved network user IDs. MarkVision will host a utility that allows IT administrators to enter user ID exceptions to normal printing function. User ID specific permissions are entered and stored in the printer. They can be updated at any time and as many times as customers wish. The list is limited to 100 user IDs per printer. The list is intended to be an exceptions list. (i.e. if normal use allows color printing for most people the list can be used to exclude certain users from color printing).
Conversely, normal usage could be no color printing and the list is used to allow color printing for select users who have demonstrated a business need to print color.
Toner Darkness Settings
Infoprint Color 1664 MFP will have 5 Toner Darkness levels for color and mono. The printer will ship with Printer Darkness set at 4. When printing in color, level 5 is equal to level 4.

Color Balance Control
The Infoprint Color 1664 MFP will offer a Color Balance Control. It is a color correction option that allows the user to increase or decrease the amount of toner going to the page individually for the cyan, magenta, yellow and black color planes. The scale for the adjustments is +5 to -5.
Color Saver Mode
The Infoprint Color 1664 MFP will offer a Color Saver Mode that allows end users to print images and graphics lighter. Text will print at Toner Darkness "4", while images and graphics print at Toner Darkness "1". The Color Saver Mode is located on the Op panel under the Color Menu and may be selected from the IBM Custom PostScript or PCL Driver.
Enhance Fine Lines
In this feature, setting this option to ON has the effect of more faithfully representing fine detail in jobs, such as fine lines in CAD drawings. The default is OFF.
Coverage Estimator
The Coverage Estimator is designed to give the user an approximation of percent coverage per color when printing a composite color document. The estimation of coverage can be used to calculate an approximate cost of any given document if yield and coverage are assumed to be linear and inversely related. This tool should allow customers to discover for themselves that printing color documents on color laser printers is frequently an economical way to create these documents. Furthermore, they can discover that many black and white documents can be improved for a nominal increase in cost.
The Coverage Estimator allows end users to estimate the percent coverage of cyan, magenta, yellow and black on a page. The estimates will be printed on the page. The Coverage Estimator is available from the Op Panel under the utility menu.
The Coverage Estimator is intended to only estimate the coverage on a given page. For all toner colors that are used, the minimum percentage reported will be two percent. Reported values may vary from printer to printer. The accuracy of the estimates may be affected by the fullness of the print cartridges, environmental conditions, media type, application, application settings, driver, driver settings, and the content of the page. IBM makes no claim as to the accuracy of the estimated percents.
Color Samples
To assist users in selecting the colors to be printed, they can print color sample pages for each of the RGB and CMYK color conversion tables used in the printer. The color sample pages consist of a series of colored boxes along with the RGB and CMYK combination that creates the color observed for each particular box. These pages can be useful in helping users decide which RGB or CMYK combinations to use in their software applications to create the desired printed color output.

Security Features
This product contains several standard and optional features and functions that improve or enhance the security of the device. See User Guide for more information.
Available MFP security features
Apply an administrative password to restrict unauthorized users from making changes to the MFP configuration.
Requires user authentication prior to performing sensitive operations such as scan-to-e-mail and scan-to-fax. This process that unauthorized individuals cannot use these functions.
Disable various device capabilities, including Copy, E-mail, FTP, Fax Send, Fax Receive, and Driver to Fax.
Disable all unneeded protocols and network communication paths by which the MFP can be configured.
MFP touch screen lock function
The MFP touch screen lock function disables the MFP functions such as copy and scan-to-email. This helps secure the MFP from unauthorized use when the office is idle or unattended. An administrator must unable the function and set the password for use with the function. Any user may then lock the MFP touch screen or unlock the touch screen using the password.
Setting security using the Embedded Web Server (EWS)
To enhance the security of network communications and MFP configuration, use the advanced security options. These features are available through the Web page of the MFP.
Setting the system password Setting the system password protects configuration of the Embedded Web Server. A system password is also required for Secure mode and confidential communication with MVP.
Using the secure Embedded Web Server
The SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) allows for secure connections to the Web server within the print device. To connect to the Embedded Web Server more securely, connect to the SSL port instead of the default HTTP port. The SSL port connection will encrypt all Web server network communications between the PC and MFP.
Supporting SNMPv3 (Simple Network Management Protocol version 3)
SNMPv3 protocol allows for encrypted and authenticated network communications. It also lets the administrator select a desired leve of security. Prior to use, at least one user name and password must be established from the settings page. To configure for SNMPv3 through the Embedded Web Server of the MFP:
Supporting IPSec (Internal Protocol Security)
IP Security protocol provides authentication and encryption of communications at the network layer allowing all application and network communications over the IP protocol to be secure. IPSec can be set up between the MFP and up to five hosts, using both IPV4 and IPV6.
Disabling ports and protocols The TCP and UDP ports can be configured to one of three modes or values:
- Disabled - Never allows network connections to this port
- Secure and unsecure - Allows the port to remain open, even in Secure mode
- Unsecured Only - Allows the port to only open when the MFP is not in Secure mode
Using 802.1x Authentication
802.1x port authentication allows the MFP to join networks that require authentication before allowing access. 802.1x port authentication can be used with the WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access) feature of an optional external wireless print server to provide WPA-Enterprise security support.
Support for 802.1x requires the establishment of credentials for the MFP. THe MFP must be known to the Authentication Server (AS). The AS will allow network access to devices presenting a valid set of credentials which typically involves a name/password combination and possibly a certificate. The AS will allow network access to the MFP presenting a valid set of credentials. The credentials can be managed by using the Embedded Web Server of the MFP.
Locking the operator panel menus
Operator Panel Menu Lockout allows creation of a PIN number and a choice of specific menus to lock. Each time a locked menu is selected, the user is prompted to enter the correct PIN at the operator panel. The PIN does not affect any access through the EWS.
Printing Lockout
Printing Lockout allows locking or unlocking of an MFP using an assigned PIN. When locked, every job the MFP receives will buffer to the hard disk. A user can print jobs only by entering the correct PIN on the operator panel. A PIN can be assigned through the Web page of the MFP.
Note: Back channel data will be processed while the MFP is locked. Reports such as users or event logs can be retrieved from a locked MFP.
Confidential Print Setup
Confidential Print Setup allows the designation of a maximum number of PIN entry attempts and allows setting an expiration time for print jobs. When a user exceeds a specific number of PIN entry attempts, all of the user's print jobs are deleted. When a user has not printed their jobs within a designated time period, the print jobs are deleted.
Encrypting the hard disk
Disk Encryption provides protection of sensitive data stored on internal hard disk drives in the event of unauthorized access to the hardware. When enabled, Disk Encryption uses 128 bit AES encryption to encrypt all data stored on the drive. This feature is disabled by default, and enabled through the Power On Configuration menu. When enabled or disabled, the entire drive is formatted, destroying any references to data that may have been stored previously.
Hard disk wiping
Hard disk wiping performs a multi-purpose overwrite of all sectors on the hard drive, mitigating the potential exposure risks for sensitive information. This feature is performed on a demand basis, and is accessed through the Power On Configuration menu.
Using the restricted server list function
The Restricted Server list lets a system support person restrict which hosts are allowed to communicate with the MFP over the network which prevents other hosts from managing and printing to the MFP.
Note: The Restricted Server List only restricts TCP traffic; it does not affect UDP traffic. The Restricted Server List supports up to ten host addresses or ten network addresses.
Digitally Signed Firmware Update Files
Upgraded firmware files from Lexmark are now signed with a digital signature, which verifies the source and authenticity of the updated code. This prevents a malicious user from creating and uploading to the MFP custom code that could intercept and expose potential confidential data.

Additional Media Guidelines
Follow the media guidelines below for successful printing:
Paper
- Rough, highly textured, limp, or pre-curled papers will result in lower print quality and more frequent paper feed failures.
- Colored papers must be able to withstand 170 deg C (338 deg F) fusing temperature.
- Preprinted forms and letterheads must be able to withstand 170 degrees C (338 degrees F) fusing temperature and should be selected using guidelines found in the printer User's Guide. The chemical process used in preprinting may render some papers unsuitable for use with the Infoprint Color 1664 MFP.
- Unsuitable papers include multipart forms and documents; chemically treated papers; coated, synthetic and thermal papers, A5 paper less than 80 gsm recycled paper less than 75 gsm; and preprinted papers requiring a high degree of registration.
- Recycled paper less than 80gsm (21lb) may cause unacceptable results.
Envelopes
- All envelopes should be new, unused, and without package damage.
- Envelopes with excessive curl or twist exceeding 6 mm, those stuck together, those with bent corners or nicked edges, or those that interlock should not be used.
- Minimum weight: 60 g/m2 (16 lb.)
- The following envelopes should not be used:
- Envelopes with windows, holes, perforations, cutouts, or deep embossing.
- Envelopes with metal clasps, string ties, or metal folding bars.
- Envelopes with exposed flap adhesive when the flap is in the closed position.
- For best results, printing on new 90 g/m2 (24 lb.) sulfite or 25% cotton bond envelopes is recommended.
- Under high humidity conditions (over 60%), envelopes may seal during printing.
Transparencies
- Use letter or A4-size sheets only.
- Transparencies specifically designed for xerographic copy machines or laser printers may be used with the Infoprint Color 1664 MFP.
Labels
Labels should be selected using guidelines found in the User's Reference, Complete Printer Reference, and tested for acceptability.
Guidelines for Scanner Document Feeder
The automatic document feeder is designed to handle most paper types. However, if you are unsure if your document will cause a jam in the automatic document feeder, we recommend that you scan it using the flatbed. The following cannot be properly fed by the automatic document feeder:
- Paper with clip or staple attached
- Paper with ink not totally dry
- Paper with inconsistent thickness, such as envelopes
- Paper with wrinkles, curls, folds or tears
- Tracing paper, coated paper, carbonless paper
- Paper that is too large or too small (use flatbed instead)
- Items other than papers, such as cloth, metal or OHP film
- Notched paper
- Paper with an odd (non-rectangular) shape
- Photographic paper
- Paper with perforations on its side
- Very thin paper
