Highlights
- High-capacity input and output with full finishing options including jogging and stapling
- RePro, copier-like function increases end-user productivity and output quality
Enhanced productivity
The Infoprint 32 and Infoprint 40 offer high speed and a wide array of powerful features for your presentations, charts, reports, statements and reprographics applications. Both printers run in the most popular IBM and non-IBM networking environments and are shared easily across multiple systems and software applications.
The Infoprint 40 delivers faster print speeds as well as additional memory, increasing users' productivity by reducing the time required to process and output large print jobs. This speedy delivery of critical print jobs eliminates the potential for employee overtime costs and loss of revenue.
Both printers handle all popular media sizes, from envelopes to A3/ledger (11" x 17"] paper. With greater power and capabilities at the desktop, users can create sophisticated business documents that require large format paper. A3/ledger paper is the solution for printing today's complex spreadsheets, engineering drawings, graphics, presentations, newsletters and reports.
Unlike most printers in this speed range, the IBM Infoprint 32 and Infoprint 40 combine the toner and photoconductor into a single supply cartridge. This convenience saves time by allowing you to replace fewer supply items.
First-generation quality
The Infoprint 32 and Infoprint 40 offer RePro, a copier-like capability designed to enable users to efficiently print multiple originals of electronically formatted documents. This feature uses a transmit-once technology that sends the file (only once) over the network, enabling the Infoprint 32 or Infoprint 40 to print multiple crisp, collated, first-generation prints. Consistent, high-quality output avoids the quality degradation that inevitably occurs with traditional, copier-generated output. Moreover, RePro technology minimizes network traffic and can free users' workstations more quickly for other tasks.
Streamlined job management
The Infoprint 32 and Infoprint 40 come standard with Network Printer Manager (NPM) software, which enables network systems administrators to remotely install, configure and manage network printers. With NPM's easy-to-use graphical interface, printer status is just a mouse click away. NPM runs on a variety of platforms, including Windows and any JavaTM 1.1-enabled Web browser.
Additionally, IBM's optional Infoprint Manager software streamlines job management functions by automating job scheduling, tracking and accounting throughout the organization. Infoprint Manager can ensure the right job reaches the right printer and the entire print load remains balanced and efficient. This minimizes trouble-shooting and maximizes printer uptime.
Reliable performance
The Infoprint 32 and Infoprint 40 support all popular data streams with standard support for PCL5e and Adobe- PostScript- 3. This newest level of PostScript provides improved performance and enhanced image quality over PostScript Level 2. Both printers also feature an integrated Advanced Function PrintingTM /Intelligent Printer Data StreamTM (AFPTM /IPDSTM) option. AFP is IBM's industry-leading digital output architecture that can enable systems-managed printing accurately and completely. AFP automates error recovery and resource management to provide unparalleled printing reliability.
Optimal print quality
The Infoprint 32 and Infoprint 40 feature excellent 600 x 600 dpi print quality with edge smoothing technology. Both printers offer three printing modes with varying levels of quality so you can select the quality level that is right for each job. For higher quality output, you can choose REFINE, a printing mode that rivals 1200 dpi image quality.
Special toner-saving IBM technology can reduce toner usage and extend toner yield by up to forty percent. This allows you to save money on supplies while maintaining high output quality.

Notes: (1) The "XX/XXMB" format indicates the memory requirements for the two memory configurations. These are PCL SAVE and PS SAVE. The first number refers to PCL SAVE and PS SAVE set to OFF and the second number refers to PCL SAVE and PS SAVE set to ON.
(2) Page Protect is an Op-panel setting in the PCL menu and PS menu. It comes up on the Op-Panel as "PAGEPROT". The default setting is "AUTO". In "AUTO" mode, the printer has the intelligence to know if there is a potential memory shortage. If there is not enough memory to print a page, the printe will then use compression algorithms. These compression algorithms will provide the printer with the ability to print the page even though there is not enough memory. An impact to performance and print quality can be experienced.
(3) In the Op-panel memory configuration menu there are two items called "PCL SAVE" and "PS SAVE". For both of these items the default setting is "OFF". This setting provides the capability to save PCL or PostScript data stream resources while switching between PCL or PostScript emulations. The default setting does not provide the saving capability. When "PCL SAVE" or "PS SAVE" is "ON", resources are: fonts, overlays, and macros.
(4) The IPDS menu items for overlay cache and print mode are provided to allow performance optimization for complex image jobs. Use of these modes MAY require additional memory to achieve optimal performance. As with all mixes of jobs, memory utilization may vary based on number of jobs, job complexity and resource requirements.

Software Solutions
Network Printer Resource Utility (NPRU)
NPRU is an application that provides a repository (resource inventory) for fonts and overlays (macros) on a workstation with access to an IBM printer. Once a font or overlay has been added to the NPRU inventory, it can be downloaded to temporary or permanent RAM on the printer or to a Flash or Hard Drive option if available.
The font formats supported are PCL Intellifonts, TrueType and PostScript Type 1. Fonts and overlays that are downloaded are available to workstation applications when the network printer drivers are selected. NPRU is a separate program that uses the printer drivers to download. It is supported for:
Operating System Data Stream

IBM Network Printer Manager (NPM) Utility
IBM provides the Network Printer Manager (NPM) Utility with an easy- to-use graphical interface for network administrators. NPM runs on these client platforms:
Microsoft Windows 95 and NT 4.0
Web Browser (Windows NT Servers)
NPM helps users install and configure IBM network printers in LANs, including Novell 3.x and 4.X networks. NPM monitors printers and provides printer status using the industry-standard, open-systems SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) Printer MIB and private enterprise MIBs. Some examples of the information available using SNMP are: on/offline, paper jam, out of toner, output tray full, input tray empty, and information about the printer's configuration, capacity, and number of pages printed.
NPM uses the following protocols:
Client Operating Control Configurable
Systems Protocols Protocols
---------------- ------------- -------------------
Windows 95/NT 4.0 TCP/IP, IPX/SPX TCP/IP, IPX/SPX, AppleTalk, NetBios
Web (1) TCP/IP, HTTP TCP/IP, NetBios, AppleTalk
Note: (1) Netscape Navigator** and Microsoft Internet Explorer**
NPM is shipped on CD-ROM with all printers. NPM is also available from the IBM Printing Systems Company Home Page at: https://www.printers.ibm.com
Refer to the World Trade Considerations for translation information.
Network Utilities
The utilities listed below are shipped with all printers. These utilities are used to configure and setup the Network Interface Cards (NIC) for the following operating systems:
Utility Operating System Protocols
------- ---------------- ---------
LAN Server (1) IBM LAN Server 3.0 and higher NetBIOS, TCP/IP (Requires OS/2 2.11 or higher client)
TES/Kermit (2) Novell NetWare 2.15, 2.3, 3.0, IPX/SPX 3.11, 3.12, 4.0, 4.01, 4.1 (3)
LAN Manager Microsoft LAN Manager NETBIOS 2.0 and later
Network utilities will be shipped on CD-ROM with the printer. Network Utilities are also available from the IBM Printing Systems Company Home Page at: https://www.printers.ibm.com.
Notes: (1) The LAN Server Printer Utility redirects as many as 16 printer queues to IBM Network Printers installed on your network using TCP/IP or NetBIOS protocols. To use the LAN Server Printer Utility with the TCP/IP protocol, you need to have TCP/IP enabled on your server. No additional software is required to use the NetBIOS protocol.
(2) Novell workstations require the TES terminal emulation program and Kermit to permit remote logon to an IBM printer NIC.
TES is a terminate-and-stay-resident (TSR) program that can be loaded from the DOS prompt or from the AUTOEXEC.BAT file. TES must be loaded before the Kermit program can be started.
Kermit is a terminal emulator program that works with TES to let a DOS workstation communicate with an IBM
NIC, so commands can be used to configure the IBM NIC.
(3) Using PConsole or NWAdmin in a NetWare 4.x environment, the printer NICs can be configured to run bindery emulation in a bindery context in the NDS tree.
Windows NT 4.0 Network Port Monitor Utility
The IBM Network Port Monitor provides bi-directional printer and job status for Infoprint 32 and Infoprint 40. It runs only on Windows NT 4.0. However, clients on the following systems can benefit from the port monitor if they use a printer that was defined on a Window NT 4.0 machine and shared to the network:
- Windows NT 4.0
- Windows 95/98
- Windows for Workgroups
Some of the benefits of the TCP/IP Network Port Monitor are:
- Display the status of a printer before printing to it.
- When a job disappears from the printer's queue view, it means the job has completed printing and is ready for pickup.
- The status column of the queue provides detailed status of a job on the printer such as "printing page 3 of 7" or" copy 2 of 5".
- Cancel print jobs on the actual printer and not just your workstation.

LPR Support
The IBM LPR Remote Printing Client utility provides a TCP/IP print monitor port driver for seamless Windows 95 network printing. This port driver can be used on Windows 95 to direct print jobs from Windows applications to the IBM Infoprint 20 or 32 and IBM Network Printers. This utility supports other printers or print servers that runs a TCP/IP LPD print server. The port driver can be used on mobile systems for remote printing or it can be used on department print servers in an unattended print server mode.
This package also includes a command line LPR executable program for printing jobs directly. The LPR program, called IBMLPR.EXE, provides standard RFC 1179 printing interface and allows the -S and -P parameters to be set by way of environment variables so that drag and drop printing can be enabled for a default printer.

IPDS Barcode Printing
To support the BCOCA tower for printing of bar codes, the OCR-A and OCR-B fonts and their corresponding codes pages (892 and 893) must be resident in the printer. These are supported as shown in the "4028 Compatibility IPDS Resident Font Set" table. Code page 1303 is also resident to be used for code 128 bar codes.
Infoprint 32 and Infoprint 40 Deviations to IPDS Architecture
Copy counters are not incremented properly for identical copies
When an LCC command requests multiple identical copies, this printer does not increment the copy counters while the identical copies are moving through the logical paper path. However, when all identical copies have reached a printer station (such as a stacker), the copy and page counters are incremented correctly. This problem does not occur with modified copies.
This deviation can result in extra copies being printed after an asynchronous exception that causes repositioning within a copy subgroup.
Groups that contain both simplex and duplex sheets cannot be stapled
When a group to be stapled changes from simplex mode to duplex mode (or vice versa), this printer ejects the previously accumulated sheets into the stacker, issues exception ID X'02C7..09', and does not staple the groups of sheets.
SCS Data Stream Font Mapping
The coax or twinax interface uses PCL fonts when operating with a non-IPDS host data stream. Imbedding of PCL and PJL commands in the SCS data stream is possible. The printer selects and uses these PCL fonts differently depending on whether the attachment is coaxial or twinaxial. With the coaxial attachment, fonts can only be selected by specifying characters-per-inch (CPI). With the twinaxial attachment, fonts can be selected by specifying either CPI or an FGID (Font Global Identifier).
