First print-out time is the time from when the printer receives a start printing signal in "READY" state until one sheet of paper is printed and delivered. These times are subject to a number of variables including: attachment type, duplex printing, communication line speed, page complexity, etc. Duplex printing will approximately double the "first print out" time.

From the time power is turned on until "READY" state is reached is approximately 60 seconds.

Note: (1) Duplex is not supported in the auxiliary tray

The maximum rated engine speeds are as follows (Impressions Per Minute). Tray 2 or 3 could be a 2,000 Sheet Input Drawer and will have the same times.

Page Protect = On: A3/Ledger (2) 48/64 MB 96 MB

Notes:

  1. Page Protect is an operator panel setting in the PCL menu and PS menu. It comes up on the operator panel as "PAGEPROT". The default setting is "AUTO". In "AUTO" mode, the printer has the intelligence to know if there is a potential memory shortage. If there is not enough memory to print a page, the printer will then use compression algorithms. These algorithms will provide the printer with the ability to print the page even though there is not enough memory. An impact to print performance and print quality can be experienced.
  2. If "PAGEPROT" is set to "ON", the compression algorithms will not be used. If a print job requires more memory, the printer will not print the page and will post a "30 MEMORY OVERFLOW".
  3. In the operator panel memory configuration menu there are two items called "PCL SAVE" and "PS SAVE". For both of these items the default setting is "OFF". This setting provides the capability to save PCL or PostScript data stream resources while switching between PCL or PostScript emulations. The default setting does not provide the saving capability. When "PCL SAVE" or "PS SAVE" is "ON", resources that were downloaded for the given emulation will be preserved between emulation switching. Downloaded resources are: fonts, overlays, and macros.
  4. The "XX/XX MB" format indicates the memory requirements for context saving turned "OFF/ON". When context saving is "ON"; fonts, macros and user defined patterns are saved when switching between PCL and PostScript.
  5. IPDS does not support printing resolution beyond 600 DPI and will cause slower printing if the printer is set in 1,200 DPI mode. Therefore, 1,200 DPI is not recommended for IPDS printing.

Size and Weight

All base models are table-top. However, the addition of the 2,000 sheet input drawer makes it a floor-standing model.

Unpacked size and weight are as follows:

IBM OS/400 ASCII Printer Support

The printer is supported as a Workstation Customization Object under the Host Print Transform (HPT) facility of OS/400 V3.2.

HPT transforms the AFPDS or SCS data stream to ASCII for printing to AS/400 ASCII emulator products with a parallel attached printer including:

  • PC or PS/2 running the IBM enhanced 5250 emulation program
  • PC or PS/2 running PC Support/400 or Client Access/400
  • Infowindow II displays (3477/3487)

The ASCII data stream can also be sent to this printer when attached directly to a Token-Ring or Ethernet LAN via the OS/400 TCP/IP Line Printer Requester (LPR) and Line Printer Daemon (LPD).

HPT support has the following limitations:

  • No host selection of envelope tray without modification of the workstation customization object.

Network Printer Resource Utility (NPRU)

NPRU is an application that provides a repository (resource inventory) for fonts and overlays (macros) on a workstation with access to an IBM network printer. Once a font or overlay has been added to the NPRU inventory, it can be downloaded to temporary or permanent RAM on the printer or to a Flash or Hard Drive option if available.

The font formats supported are PCL Intellifonts, TrueType and PostScript Type 1. Fonts and overlays that are downloaded are available to workstation applications when the network printer drivers are selected. NPRU is a separate program that uses the printer drivers to download. It is supported for:

    Operating System Data Stream
---------------- -----------

IBM Network Printer Manager (NPM) Utility

IBM provides the Network Printer Manager (NPM) Utility with an easy-to-use graphical interface for network administrators. NPM runs on these client platforms:

  • IBM OS/2 Warp
  • Microsoft Windows 95 and NT
  • Web Browser (OS/2 and Windows NT Servers)

NPM helps users install and configure IBM network printers in LANs, including Novell 3.x and 4.X networks. NPM monitors printers and provides printer status using the (Simple Network Management Protocol) Printer MIB and private enterprise MIBs. Some examples of the information available using SNMP are: on/offline, paper jam, out of toner, output tray full, input tray empty, and information about the printer's configuration, capacity, and number of pages printed.

NPM uses the following protocols:

Client Operating Control Configurable
Systems Protocols Protocols
---------------- ------------- -------------------
OS/2 TCP/IP TCP/IP, NetBios, AppleTalk
Windows TCP/IP, IPX/SPX TCP/IP, IPX/SPX, AppleTalk, NetBios
Web (1) TCP/IP, HTTP TCP/IP, NetBios, AppleTalk

Note: (1) Netscape Navigator** and Microsoft Internet Explorer**.

NPM is shipped on CD-ROM with all printers. NPM is also available from the IBM Printing Systems Company Home Page at:

https://www.printers.ibm.com

Network Utilities

The utilities listed below are shipped with all printers. These utilities are used to configure and set up the Network Interface Cards (NIC) for the following operating systems:

  Utility Operating System Protocols
------- ---------------- ---------
LAN Server (1) IBM LAN Server 3.0 and higher NetBIOS, TCP/IP
(Requires OS/2 2.11 or higher client)

TES/Kermit (2) Novell NetWare 2.15, 2.3, 3.0, IPX/SPX
3.11, 3.12, 4.0, 4.01, 4.1 (3)

LAN Manager Microsoft LAN Manager NETBIOS
2.0 and later

Network utilities will be shipped on CD-ROM with the printer. Network Utilities are also available from the IBM Printing Systems Company Home Page at:

https://www.printers.ibm.com
Notes: (1) The LAN Server Printer Utility redirects as many as 16
printer queues to IBM Network Printers installed on your
network using TCP/IP or NetBIOS protocols. To use the
LAN Server Printer Utility with the TCP/IP protocol, you
need to have TCP/IP enabled on your server. No additional
software is required to use the NetBIOS protocol.

(2) Novell workstations require the TES terminal emulation
program and Kermit to permit remote logon to an IBM
printer NIC.

TES is a terminate-and-stay-resident (TSR) program that
can be loaded from the DOS prompt or from the AUTOEXEC.BAT
file. TES must be loaded before the Kermit program can
be started.

Kermit is a terminal emulator program that works with
TES to let a DOS workstation communicate with an IBM
NIC, so commands can be used to configure
the IBM NIC.

(3) Using PConsole or NWAdmin in a NetWare 4.x environment,
the printer NICs can be configured to run bindery
emulation in a bindery context in the NDS tree.

TCP/IP Network Port Monitor Utility

The IBM TCP/IP Network Port Monitor provides bi-directional printer and job status for the InfoPrint 20. It runs only on Windows NT 4.0. However, clients on the following systems can benefit from the port monitor if they use a printer that was defined on a Window NT 4.0 machine and shared to the network:

  • Windows NT 4.0
  • Windows 95
  • Windows for Workgroups

Some of the benefits of the TCP/IP Network Port Monitor are:

  • Display the status of a printer before printing to it.
  • When a job disappears from the printer's queue view, it means the job has completed printing and is ready for pickup.
  • The status column of the queue provides detailed status of a job on the printer such as "printing page 3 of 7" or" copy 2 of 5".
  • Cancel print jobs on the actual printer and not just your workstation.

  • IPDS Barcode Printing

To support the BCOCA tower for printing of bar codes, the OCR-A and OCR-B fonts and their corresponding codes pages (892 and 893) must be resident in the printer. These are supported as shown in the "4028 Compatibility IPDS Resident Font Set" table. Code page 1303 is also resident to be used for 128 bar codes.

SCS Data Stream Font Mapping

The coax or twinax interface uses PCL fonts when operating with a non-IPDS host data stream. Imbedding of PCL and PJL commands in the SCS data stream is possible. The printer selects and uses these PCL fonts differently depending on whether the attachment is coaxial or twinaxial. With the coaxial attachment, fonts can only be selected by specifying characters-per-inch (CPI). With the twinaxial attachment, fonts can be selected by specifying either CPI or an FGID (Font Global Identifier).

EBCDIC Attachment Language Support

The language and associated code page support below is based on the current SAA Core Interchange Resident Code Page Support and 4028 Compatibility Resident Code Page Set. Only EBCDIC code pages are listed.

Supplies

The InfoPrint 20 is shipped with one toner cartridge. It is the customer's responsibility to ensure the availability of the necessary supply items for operation of the InfoPrint 20 Printer, and to order and maintain an adequate stock of supplies. The components of the Usage Kit are part of the base printer. The following replacement supplies are available:

Description Part Number Approximate Average Yield (1)
----------- ----------- -----------------------------
Toner Cartridge P/N 90H0748 14,000 impressions
Usage Kit 100V (2) P/N 90H3465 200,000 impressions
Usage Kit 120V (2) P/N 90H0750 200,000 impressions
Usage Kit 220V (2) P/N 90H0751 200,000 impressions

Notes: (1) Approximate average yield has been established with
a coverage of 5%. An "impression" is defined as one
printed side of a sheet. A duplex sheet would consist of
two impressions. TonerMiser may increase the yield of the
toner cartridge up to two times (28K at 5%).

(2) Includes a fuser, bias transfer roller (BTR) assembly.
Significant use of heavy paper stock may impact fuser life.

The above items are considered supplies and, as such, are not available through the parts system or included in the warranty or maintenance service agreement.

The approximate average yields are not a warranty or guarantee of minimum life, and are provided to assist in initial supplies planning. Actual usage should be used to establish the supply's life in the end user's application. Many factors (for example, print coverage per page, machine settings, paper type and size, and environmental conditions) can affect supply life.

Supply warranties are only for defects in materials and workmanship at the time of shipment/installation. They are not for print count life or normal wear and tear, nor for any print count minimum. Contact your place of purchase for warranty return instructions.

IBM is committed to environmentally conscious programs for printer supplies. A collection program for used printer cartridges has been established and return instructions are included in the supply item packaging, with free return shipping.

Printing supplies can be ordered through your IBM authorized printer or supplies reseller. If you have no reseller, you can be directed to the closest one in your area by contacting: IBM Printing Systems Company Supplies at 1-888-IBM-PRINT.
