Additional Media Guidelines for InfoPrint Color 1854
Follow the media guidelines below for successful printing:
Paper
- Rough, highly textured, limp, or pre-curled papers will result in lower print quality and more frequent paper feed failures.
- Colored papers must be able to withstand 190 deg C (374 deg F) fusing temperature.
- Preprinted forms and letterheads must be able to withstand 190 deg C (374 deg F) fusing temperature and should be selected using guidelines found in the printer User's Guide. The chemical process used in preprinting may render some papers unsuitable for use with this printer.
Recycled paper
As an environmentally conscious company, InfoPrint Solutions Company supports the use of recycled office paper produced specifically for use in laser (electrophotographic) printers. The following property guidelines apply to recycled paper.
- Low moisture content (4-5%)
- Suitable smoothness (100-200 Sheffield units)
- Suitable sheet-to-sheet coefficient of friction (0.4-0.6)
- Sufficient bending resistance in the direction of feed
Recycled paper, paper of lower weight (<60 gsm / 16 lb bond) and/or lower caliper (<3.8 mils / 0.1 mm), and paper that is cut grain-short for portrait (or short-edge) fed printers may have lower bending resistance than is required for reliable paper feeding. Before using these types of paper for laser (electrophotographic) printing, consult your paper supplier. Remember that these are general guidelines only and that paper meeting these guidelines may still cause paper feeding problems.
Unacceptable paper
The following paper types are not recommended for use with the printer:
- Chemically treated papers used to make copies without carbon paper, also known as carbonless papers, carbonless copy paper (CCP), or no carbon required (NCR) paper
- Preprinted papers with chemicals that may contaminate the printer
- Preprinted papers that can be affected by the temperature in the printer fuser
- Preprinted papers that require a registration (the precise print location on the page) greater than +/-2.3 mm (+/-0.9 in.), such as optical character recognition (OCR) forms. In some cases, registration can be adjusted with a software application to successfully print on these forms.
- Coated papers (erasable bond), synthetic papers, thermal papers
- Rough-edged, rough or heavily textured surface papers, or curled papers
- Recycled papers that fail EN12281:2002 (European).
- Paper weighing less than 60 gsm (16 lb)
- A5 paper less than 80 gsm (21 lb)
- Multiple-part forms or documents
Envelopes
- All envelopes should be new, unused, and without package damage
- Envelopes with excessive curl or twist exceeding 6 mm, those stuck together, those with bent corners or nicked edges, or those that interlock should not be used
- Minimum weight: 60 gsm (16 lb.)
- The following envelopes should not be used:
- Envelopes with windows, holes, perforations, cutouts, or deep embossing
- Envelopes with metal clasps, string ties, or metal folding bars
- Envelopes with exposed flap adhesive when the flap is in the closed position
- For best results, printing on new 90 gsm (24 lb.) sulfite or 25% cotton bond envelopes is recommended.
- Under high humidity conditions (over 60%), envelopes may seal during printing.
Transparencies
- Use letter or A4-size sheets only
- Transparencies specifically designed for xerographic copy machines or laser printers may be used with the InfoPrint Color 1854
Labels
Labels should be selected using guidelines found in the User's Reference, Complete Printer Reference, or the Cardstock and Label, and tested for acceptability. VINYL AND POLYESTER LABELS ARE NOT SUPPORTED.
Print Quality
General Statement
During the life of the printer, components are subject to wear based on usage. Printers continuously operating at or near the maximum duty cycle may require service for replacement of these components to ensure high quality printing and good performance throughout the life of the printer.
Automatic Calibration
The printer has three unique modes of automatic calibration defined. When the engine default resolution is 4800CQ and a triggering event occurs, a "Quick Calibration" is asserted, which includes Auto Alignment and 600 dpi calibration. Conversely, when the engine default resolution is 1200 dpi, a "Full Calibration" is asserted, which includes Auto Alignment, 600 dpi calibration, and 1200 dpi linearization. Additionally, in certain scenarios, a unique "1200 dpi Linearization Only" calibration is performed.
The printer performs an automatic calibration under the following conditions:
- Power on if the printer is cold and in some other conditions
- 8 hours of Power Saver in some conditions
- 500 pages (user selectable)
- Changing a supply item (print cartridge, photoconductor, transfer belt)
- First 1200 dpi page received if 1200 calibration has not been done
Calibration can be manually initiated by selecting "Color Adjust" from the Quality Menu. In Black Only Mode auto calibration is automatically disabled.
Resolution
The following resolutions are available:
- 4800 "Color Quality" (default)
- 1200 x 1200 dpi (reduced printer speed)
Color and Black & White Printer Controls
The printer will automatically retract color cartridges for black only printing with an algorithm based on the color content of the pages. This algorithm may be disabled by setting the printer usage to maximum speed. The color cartridges will also be retracted if black only printing is selected for an entire print job. These are a means of controlling color vs. black only printing.
Op Panel Color Lockout
This is a printer based operation that is invoked from the configuration menu (requires POR). The user manually removes color cartridges and photo conductor units, and sets the printer to color lockout mode.
Op Panel Black-Only Mode
This is a printer based operation that is invoked from the Setup menu. This mode is similar to the color lockout mode but does not require the removal of color supplies. Any color content is converted to black only.
Op Panel Black Print Mode
This is a printer based operation that is invoked from the Quality menu. If the input job from a printer driver does not select Color or Black and White printing, this printer default is used. This could include some legacy applications that generate color PCL.
Mono Driver Mode
This is a workstation based control that can be chosen via the driver.
Network (NPA or PJL) Black & White Mode
This is data stream based remotely enabled operation.
Print Permissions Black & White Mode
This is MarkVision controlled. It allows privileged users to print color.
Color Correction Settings

Color Balance Control
InfoPrint Color 1854 offers a Color Balance Control. It is a color correction option that allows the user to increase or decrease the amount of toner going to the page individually for the cyan, magenta, yellow and black color planes. The scale for the adjustments is +5 to -5.
RGB Brightness/Contrast/Saturation
An RGB Hue Color Adjustment is selectable in a similar fashion to color balance.
ColorSaver Mode
InfoPrint Color 1854 will offer a ColorSaver Mode that allows end users to print images and graphics lighter. Text will print at Toner Darkness "4", while images and graphics print at Toner Darkness "1". The ColorSaver Mode is located on the Op panel under the Quality Menu. The ColorSaver feature is available in PostScript, PCL/XL, PCL 5c, PDF, and XPS jobs.
Coverage Estimator
The Coverage Estimator is designed to give the user an approximation of percent coverage per color when printing a composite color document. The estimation of coverage can be used to calculate an approximate cost of any given document if yield and coverage are assumed to be linear and inversely related. This tool should allow customers to discover for themselves that printing color documents on color laser printers is frequently an economical way to create these documents. Furthermore, they can discover that many black and white documents can be improved for a nominal increase in cost.
The Coverage Estimator allows end users to estimate the percent coverage of cyan, magenta, yellow and black for a print job. The estimates will be printed on a report page following the job. The Coverage Estimator is available from the Op Panel under the utility menu.
The Coverage Estimator is intended to only estimate the coverage on a given job. For all toner colors that are used, the minimum percentage reported will be two percent. Reported values may vary from printer to printer. The accuracy of the estimates may be affected by the fullness of the print cartridges, environmental conditions, media type, application, application settings, driver, driver settings, and the content of the page. InfoPrint Solutions Company makes no claim as to the accuracy of the estimated percents.
Color Samples
To assist users in selecting the colors to be printed, they can print color samples pages for each of the RGB and CMYK color conversion tables used in the printer. The color samples pages consist of a series of colored boxes along with the RGB or CMYK combination that creates the color observed for each particular box. These pages can be useful in helping users decide which RGB or CMYK combinations to use in their software applications to create the desired printed color output.
Enhance Fine Lines
In this feature, setting this option to TRUE has the effect of more faithfully representing fine detail in jobs, such as fine lines in CAD drawings. The default is false.

Security Features
This printer contains several standard and optional features and functions that improve or enhance the security of the device.
Secure Management with MarkVision Professional
Using the latest version of MarkVision Professional, administrators can configure and manage the printer securely by using authenticated and encrypted network communications. The MarkVision Professional plug-in for InfoPrint Color 1854 support must also be downloaded and installed.
Secure Network Communications
The printer contains support for several network protocols that increase the security of network communications.
- The addition of the SSL protocol allows for secure connections to the embedded web server in the device, which protects configuration and device status messages. SSL also provides the ability to perform secure Pull Printing.
- SNMPv3 support allows for encrypted and authenticated management traffic, protecting remote configuration and device status messages.
- IPSec (Internet Protocol Security) can be used with both IPv4 and IPv6 networks. IPSec provides encryption and authentication of communications at the network layer.
- Security Lockdown - When the adapter password has been set, an administrator can put the printer into "Security Lockdown" mode, where all insecure TCP and UDP ports are disabled (discovery and print ports remain open). TCP and UDP port numbers may also be closed individually.
Confidential Print
Using Confidential Print, a user may assign a PIN to a print job, and have the printer hold that job until the user physically arrives and enters the correct PIN. This will prevent another user from taking the printed output from the output bin.
Several enhancements have been added to Confidential Print with the release of this and concurrent models:
- Job Expiration - An administrator can now configure the printer to automatically delete Confidential Print jobs after a specified amount of printer uptime. This time limit can be set to the following options: 1 hour, 4 hours, 24 hours, or 1 week.
- Increased PIN Digit Support - PIN numbers can now consist of four numbers between 0-9, providing 10,000 possible PIN combinations. Previous models supported four numbers from 1-6, with 1296 possible PIN combinations.
- Maximum Invalid PIN Attempts - An administrator can now configure the printer to automatically delete a Confidential Print job if the incorrect PIN number has been entered a specified number of times. This can be set to be between 2 and 10 invalid PIN attempts.
Digitally Signed Firmware Update Files
Upgraded firmware files from InfoPrint Solutions Company are now signed with a digital signature, which verifies the source and authenticity of the updated code. This prevents a malicious user from creating and uploading to the printer custom code that could intercept and expose potential confidential data.
Encryption for Optional Internal Hard Disk Drives
When equipped with an optional internal hard disk drive, a printer could potentially store print job data, thus providing an avenue for a malicious user to retrieve the data. When "Disk Encryption" is enabled, a 128 bit encryption key is randomly generated and then used to encrypt all the data on the hard drive using the AES algorithm. This encryption key is unique to the printer that created it, therefore an encrypted hard drive could not be placed into another device and the data subsequently retrieved.
Operator Panel Menu Lockout
An administrator may apply a PIN number to protect the administration menus available through the printer operator panel. The following top-level menus can be protected using this feature:
- Paper
- Reports
- Settings
- Security
- Network/Ports
Printing Lockout
When a hard disk is installed in the printer, the user has the option of locking the print device with a user defined PIN and preventing it from printing submitted jobs. All submitted print jobs will be stored on the internal hard drive until the printer is unlocked with the correct PIN. This feature will be especially useful in preventing printing after normal business hours. This feature is setup through the printer's embedded web server and is enabled from the printer's operator panel. It is not supported through MarkVision Professional.
Note: Disk Encryption should also be enabled when using this feature to ensure that the data is stored securely in the event that the drive is removed to defeat Printing Lockout.

Operating Modes
Two new operating modes are implemented, Eco Mode and Quiet Mode. The Eco Mode optimizes printer settings to minimize the environmental impact while Quiet Mode significantly reduces acoustics.
Eco Mode
The Eco Mode optimizes printer settings to minimize the environmental impact. Eco Mode allows customers to configure the printer to minimize energy consumption, especially when not printing, and to reduce the amount of paper consumed when printing. Eco Mode Settings are:
- Off
Settings or parameters that were changed when other modes (Energy, Energy/Paper, or Paper) were selected (see below) are returned to their factory default states. This mode will support performance claims for the product.
- Energy
The printer will be configured to be ecologically sensitive with respect to energy use. Choose this mode if interested in minimizing energy use, especially when not printing. The user may also trade time to first page (TTFP) performance (but not the fidelity of the print job) for ecological sensitivity. The follow settings are affected on the printers:
- Power saver is set to one minute
- Operator panel backlight is turned off while in power saver
- Upon receiving a print job, engine motors are not ramped up prior to the job being ready to actually print
- Energy/Paper
Includes all of the settings associated with Energy mode plus duplex printing is set as the device default (if equipped).
- Paper
Duplex printing is set as the device default (if equipped).
Quiet Mode
Quiet Mode Setting
- Off
The parameters that are changed when "On" is selected (see below) are returned to their factory default state. This mode will support performance claims for the product, and is intended for all document types.
- On
Printer will be configured to run in a reduced noise mode. Primarily, the user is trading performance for quieter operation. This mode is best suited for text and line graphics documents. The following parameters are affected:
- Process speed is reduced
- Beeps are disabled or minimized (key press, alarms, and so on)
- Some slight print differences from full speed may be visible
- The driver photo quality setting may override quiet mode and increase process speed for best quality

It also supports the use of Session or dynamic encryption keys, which greatly reduces management overhead. Session keys are automatically and randomly generated with each print job, ensuring that a unique key is applied to each print job.
(P/N 39V2694) IPDS & SCS/Tne Card
- Minimum required = 0, maximum allowed = 1
- Prerequisite = none, Co-requisite = none
- Conflict = Bar Code Card and Decryption Card
This feature provides configuration flexibility and compatibility for AFP/IPDS or SCS printing on TCP/IP LAN printers. It is compatible with IBM mainframe or IBM iSeries and AS/400 applications that generate SCS (LU1) output or with applications that output AFP/IPDS through the Print Services Facility (PSF).
This feature provides IS or IT managers an affordable printing solution in a distributed network or on a local area network for applications or software that generate AFP/IPDS or SCS. The IPDS and SCS/TNe Card offers customers the following benefits:
- Print PostScript, PCL, AFP/IPDS, SCS, and other local area network printer documents from mainframe, iSeries, or AS/400 systems on one printer.
- Supports IPDS FS45 for full color printing. On monochrome printers, color documents can be transformed to black or shades of gray, based upon the IPDS menu Color Mode setting.
- IPDS N-up and N-up Explicit Page Placement support. Print 1 to 4 partitions per side or 8 partitions per sheet when printing duplex pages.
- IPDS PDF417, DataMatrix, Maxicode and Quick Response (QR) 2D bar code support in the bar code tower.
- United States Postal Service 4 state bar code support (Intelligent Mail Barcode).
- Download DBCS outline and bitmap fonts from the host in IPDS.
- Supports downloaded True Type fonts in IPDS
- Capture bitmap or outline fonts to an optional flash memory or optional hard disk using AFP/IPDS and PSF. This results in reduced network traffic over local area networks.
- Supports TN3270E or TN5250E SCS (LU1) over the LAN using TCP/IP with Telnet.
- Emulates common IBM IPDS and SCS printers.
- Automatic resolution sensing for IPDS when the Host Resolution menu item is set to Auto. Selecting Auto allows 240, 300 and 600 dpi resources to be downloaded from the host.
- Product Identifier Self Defining Field Information is returned to the host with IPDS. Device type, serial number, printer code levels and printer name are returned to the host. These may be displayed at the host to aid in printer location and maintenance.
- Configure SCS/TNe and IPDS settings using a printer resident web server, a browser, and the printer's IP address.
The IPDS and SCS/TNe Card is an option that is installed in the printer application solution slot. With this card and the standard Ethernet TCP/IP port, the printer becomes an IBM host workstation printer capable of printing AFP/IPDS or SCS documents from an IBM iSeries, AS/400, or mainframe computer.
The printer emulates an IBM mainframe, iSeries, or AS/400 host printer when used with the appropriate host software and this card. The printer emulates one TN3270E printer session and up to four TN5250E printer sessions using the LU1 SCS data stream over TCP/IP with the TN3270E and TN5250E extended Telnet protocol support in this option. This is supported directly from an iSeries, AS/400, or from a mainframe using TCP/IP or through any TN3270E capable gateway that supports TN3270E according to RFC 2355. The DSC/DSE or SCS data streams over LU3 or LU0 are not supported. The Telnet protocol function is only supported with the printer through the standard Ethernet network port or with the internal print servers.
The printer can be configured to save IPDS resources when attached to a LAN through the standard Ethernet port. This will improve performance on complex IPDS print jobs with host resources such as fonts, overlays, or page segments.
The IPDS emulation supports the IPDS data and resource towers. Fonts can be downloaded, captured and saved to an optional flash memory or optional hard disk in the printer. The US Postal Service (USPS) POSTNET bar code, USPS PLANET bar code, USPS Intelligent Mail Bar Code, and the euro currency symbol are supported within IPDS. The euro currency symbol is also supported in the SCS/TNe, PostScript and PCL 6 emulations.
DBCS characters in Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, Korean, and Japanese can be downloaded and printed from the host. DBCS fonts may be stored in flash memory or on the hard disk using the Font Capture feature to reduce network traffic and transmission time. The separate DBCS Font Cards cannot be used with the IPDS and SCS/TNe Card.
