Operating Simplicity
Significantly more reliable than its IBM predecessor models, the IBM 6262 offers new levels of operating simplicity and ease of use. Its swing gate allows operators to load forms faster and more easily, and its four forms-feed tractors (which can be adjusted with a single knob) permit routine processing of pre-numbered forms.
The 6262 Printer has a low noise level, making it quieter than almost any other printer in its performance range and suitable for placement virtually anywhere a printing need exists.
Flexible System Attachments
Depending upon the model you choose, the 6262 can attach to a wide variety of IBM systems including the IBM Personal System/2 (PS/2), Application System/400(AS/400), including the Advanced 36, System/36, System/38, System/390, Enterprise System/9000, (S/9000), and IBM 3270 Information System. The 6262 family also includes the 6262 A22, which enable attachment to a variety of non-IBM and IBM ASCII hosts that interface with personal computers, workstations and LAN print stations. The 6262 P22 will attach to non-IBM system hosts using the Dataproducts** parallel system printer interface. Other attachment conversions or model changes are also available.
Advanced Diagnostics for High Availability
The IBM 6262 provides a number of sophisticated diagnostic capabilities including an 80 character, plain language diagnostic and test message display. Internal processors constantly monitor operations, maintaining high throughput and decreasing the need for operator intervention. Add operator-initiated problem analysis and resolution procedures and you have a printer that seldom requires a service call.
Enhanced Operator Capabilities
With the improved IBM 6262 operator panel, operators can change print contrast, page length and vertical spacing, as well as specify the forms control buffer from the host processor. By monitoring a ribbon pass counter, operators can manage ribbon life during critical print quality operations. In addition, operators can initiate an electronic flight-timing routine that maintains optimum print quality without a service call. A highly visible attention light alerts operators to those situations when the printer does require attention. Also, a convenience vacuum is included to make routine printer cleaning quick and easy.

Description
The 6262 printers set new IBM price performance standards for the 1,200, 1,400 and 2,200 lpm users. Utilizing a fully formed character printband, they produce a print quality equal to or better than the 4245 Printers. The operator-invoked flight timing function allows easy maintenance of print quality by the operator.
The 6262 printers are suitable for either computer center or workstation environments. They provide a reliability superior to the 3203 Printer, a reduced footprint (64 percent of the 4245 Printer), quieter operation (58 dB versus 64 dB of the 4245), and easier to use operator controls. For example, the horizontal forms alignment procedure uses a single mechanical knob to adjust position and tension, the vertical alignment procedure is electronically controlled from the operator panel.
Forms loading and band or ribbon replacement is now easier because they are all mounted on a swing gate which moves away from the form. The processing of pre-numbered forms is now enhanced because of the improved four tractor registration. Individual adjustment of left or right tractor sets is possible - or all four tractors can be adjusted simultaneously by a single knob.
An off-line electronic operator's routine can change contrast, page length and vertical spacing - 6, 8 (and 3 or 4 on T models) lpi. The ability to specify both page length and vertical spacing from the host processor is possible. The service procedure for changing hex code assignment in the microcode is a quick way of making unprintables visible as a printed character or masking out an unwanted character. Also supports some custom printbands that are minor variations of another band. Additional benefits of the 6262 printers include: standard OCR alphanumeric printing, a power stacker on all 1,400 & 2,200 lpm models, and an 80 character L.C.D. panel display - for operator messages.
The 6262 Bar Code feature enhances the capabilities of the IBM 6262 printer family which will be particularly attractive to customers with high volume bar code printing requirements.
Bar code formats and symbologies produced are:
Symbology Format Code 39 (or code 3 of 9) ladder or picket Interleaved 2 of 5 ladder or picket US Postal ZIP+4 Bar Code picket Universal Product Code (UPC) ladder Code 128 Bar Code ladder European Article Numbering (EAN) ladder
The 6262 Bar Code feature printing conforms to the ANSI Guidelines for Bar Code Print Quality and to the Automotive Industry Action Group (AIAG) label standard.
In addition to various custom and proprietary labels, the following standard industry bar code labels may be printed on the IBM 6262:
- Automotive Industry Action Group (AIAG)
- Organization for Data Exchange Tele Transmission for Europe (ODETTE)
Model Description 6262-022
2200 lpm with a 48 character set. Impact line printer for attachment to 370 channel.
A number of functions have been added to the x22 models, including:
- The operator-invoked flight timing is now built into the printer platen, thus eliminating the need to mount a separate flight timing bar.
- Accommodation of forms widths up to 18.5 inches, compared to a maximum of 17.7 on most installed Models 12 and 14. However, the wider width is also now available on new Models 12 and 14 as of June 1989.
- A hand-held convenience vacuum to facilitate general cleaning of the printer.
- Job set-up, offers the capability to save values selected to print a specific job for later use. Values saved are: lines per inch, line length, page length, print contrast, and flight-time tables.
- An enhanced attention light. Forms related conditions (such as stacker full, end-of-forms, and forms jams) are indicated with a faster flashing rate than other conditions. The audible alarm can be programmed to sound in conjunction with the light.
- A ribbon pass counter. This is helpful in more critical printing applications such as OCR and bar code to prevent going beyond the useful life of the ribbon.

Limitations
Models
The IBM Impact Line Printer 2,200 LPM Models (x22) have entirely new print hammer units and power supplies. It is not feasible for field upgrades of the 6262 Models 12 and 14 to these models.
Forms
Minimum Maximum Form Thickness: -- .51 mm (.020 inch) Weight: 56 gm/sqm (15 lb) 163 gm/sqm (100 lb) Width: 89 mm (3.5 inch) 470 mm (18.5 inch) (b) Length (fold to fold): 152 mm (6.1 inch) 356 mm (14 inch) (b) Length (layout): 76 mm (3 inch) --
Important, please read:
When using forms wider than 405mm (15.9 inch) horizontal vernier adjustment will be limited. This may cause the inability to print over the entire form or in areas used by a previously installed printer. If the 6262 is replacing any incumbent printer, IBM or non-IBM, pay particular attention to insuring that all forms used with the previous printer can be used with the 6262. If there are any questions please contact PENNHELP at BLDVMB.
Also, the first print position remains 392mm (15.4 inch) from RIGHT edge of the paper as forms width increases to maximum dimension for Model 12s above Serial No. 51005 or Model 14s above Serial No. 10637 or earlier machines with EC A83309 installed. (b) Forms length over 14 inches can be accommodated with doors open.
OCR Forms
- Multiple part forms are not recommended for OCR printing. The print quality of the top sheet is affected by the underlying sheets. For best results, use 75-90 gr/sqm (20-24 lbs.) OCR bond single-part forms. OCR forms using other papers should be tested for satisfactory results with reading equipment.
- When reading OCR with the 3886 Optical Character Reader, the re-read on reject capability and 3211/5211 Compatibility (#9701) should be used on the 3886.
- OCR printing is limited to controlled data processing environments. Refer to appropriate system planning guides and to the "IBM 6262 User's Guide" for details.
