Description

The IBM InfoPrint 60 offers increased print resolution of 600 dots- per-inch (dpi) compared to 240 dpi on the 3160-001.

Effective with printers shipped June 27, 1997, the IBM InfoPrint 60 will print all AFP data objects with resolutions of 240, 300 or 600 pel resolutions. The customer may choose 240/600 mode, 300/600 mode or the printers native 600 mode. This gives the customer the ability to print legacy jobs including 240 or 300 dpi objects (scaled to 600 dpi in the printer) or to create and run new native 600 dpi applications on the same printer. Minor placement variations may occur. This fulfills the statement of direction given in the original announcement of the InfoPrint 60. InfoPrint 60 printers shipped prior to June 27, 1997 can be upgraded with this functional enhancement by having version 4.2 level of microcode installed in the printer. The 3160-001 prints at 240 dpi. Resolution dependent objects must be 240 dpi for proper printing.

Both printers can serve as distributed printers in an Ethernet or Token Ring LAN environment using TCP/IP or it can be utilized as an entry level print on demand solution. The 3160-001 also supports channel and Token-Ring SNA attachments.

Print Capacity

The IBM InfoPrint 60 has a maximum monthly print capacity of 750,000 impressions per month.

Operator Display and Interface

The IBM InfoPrint 60's primary operator interface is through a Type 1 operator panel. The operator panel is comprised of a 2 X 16 character LCD operator display that provides printer status, intervention conditions and a menu of operations information. The operator panel keys and indicators are labeled in English. A translated overlay is provided in one of the following languages: English, Brazilian Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Japanese (Katakana) and Spanish, based on the country code default. The operator panel LCD messaging is configurable in one of the following seven languages: English, Brazilian Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Japanese (Katakana) and Spanish.

Printer Control Capabilities

The IBM InfoPrint 60 is managed by a high performance printer controller (AFCCU), that is functionally common to IBM's family of high speed printers and helps ensure cross-printer compatibility within hardware limits. The InfoPrint 60 contains 64MB of RAM storage which can be expanded to a maximum of 128MB for performance enhancement.

The InfoPrint 60 receives print information from the host system in the form of an Intelligent Printer Data Stream (IPDS). IPDS is an IBM host-to-printer data stream designed to manage and control printer processes. It is distinguished from previous data streams for printers because it supports all-points addressability, which means it has the capability of placing data at any defined point on the valid printable area of a page. The IPDS structure is a significant concept because it allows both data and commands to be sent to a printer connected to the host system, independent of the attachment protocol used to connect the printer to the host. IPDS permits the same data stream to be used for printers that are attached by channels, controllers or any type of networking link that supports the transparent transmission of data to printing processes that are resident in the printer.

Resolution Migration

The following data types will be supported, at General Availability, for 240 and 300 pel job streams to be printed at 600 dpi resolution:

  • Images (IM1, IOCA)
  • Bar Codes (BCOCA)
  • Text - Outline Fonts

Note:Minor character placement issues may occur.

Resident IPDS Fonts

The IBM AFP Expanded Core font set, is supported as scalable Type 1 outline fonts. The IBM AFP Expanded Core font set is contained in the AFCCU's hard disk with the default font of Courier Roman Medium 12 pitch (10 point).

The InfoPrint 60 has the font handling capability for 600 pel outline fonts. However, the support level is dependant on the various PSF platforms. For details, refer to the Software Requirements section and the product's Introduction and Planning Guide (G544-5242).

Limitations
  • Printer Performance

The IBM InfoPrint 60 has a maximum rated print engine speed of up to 60 PPM. As is the case with most printers, performance depends on the following:

    • Interface to host
    • Host system and application
    • Complexity and content of the page being printed
    • Paper size (1)
    • Available memory

Note:(1) See maximum impressions per minute per paper size listed in the Specified Operating Environment Section.

Other factors that can have an affect on InfoPrint 60 performance are:

  • Side Sensitive Print Option when printing simplex pages
  • Cycle loss when switching between duplex and simplex pages in the same job.

The Side Sensitive Option prints side two first, emulating the 3825. While this works fine in duplex mode, this option also forces simplex pages through the duplex paper path, reducing performance to 30 ipm and affecting usage charges. (2)

Applications that switch form simplex to duplex in the same job may also encounter a performance impact. It is common for high speed laser printers to lose cycles during simplex to duplex switching operations. For example, the InfoPrint 60 will lose four cycles (impressions) during this operation. (2)

Note:(2) See BLD FLASH 9549 for operating alternatives and additional performance detail.

  • Label Printing

When printing labels, observe the following:

    • USE ONLY THE BASE STACKER. Using the side stacker for labels may damage the printer.
    • Disable the side stacker.
    • Load labels face down in the upper sub tray, lower sub tray, or main tray.
    • Run labels only in simplex mode
    • Before ordering large quantities of you labels, run several small jobs to be sure they work properly.
    • Refer to InfoPrint 60 User's Guide for more details about running labels.

he following features are available and can be ordered with new machines or as MES field upgrades:

Attachment features

One attachment feature is required to be ordered at the time the InfoPrint 60 is ordered. A second may be ordered. However, FC #4161 and FC #4162 are mutually exclusive. These are not customer set-up features. There are no compatibility conflicts for these features. The ethernet features do require a cable for attachment to the LAN. These features are available as factory installed features or MESs for field installation. When an attachment feature is added as an MES, any mutually exclusive feature must be removed.

(#4020) 370 Parallel Channel Attachment

(For IBM US, No Longer Available as of October 18, 2002)

This feature provides a high speed direct attachment using IBM Tag and Bus cables to an IBM 370 Parallel block multiplexer channel. This enables the InfoPrint 60 to connect directly to an IBM 3090, ES/9000, S390 Parallel Enterprise Server or S390 Multiprise 2000 server.

The 370 Parallel Channel Attachment supports a maximum cable length of 122 meters (400 ft.) if it is the only control unit on the interface. For each additional control unit (up to a maximum of eight control units) this length is reduced by 4.6 meters (15 ft.).

The 370 Parallel Channel Attachment can also be attached to the remote end of an IBM 9034 ESCON converter which can extend the standard channel interface by up to 3 Kilometers (9,842 ft.). An alternative way to extend the distance is to use the Extended Distance Feature (XDF) on the 9032 or 9033. If additional distance is required, submit an RPQ for extended distance for 9032 or 9033 with Extended Distance Feature. For more information, consult the 9034, 3044-2 and 9032/9033 product publications.

This feature is supported on the following software platforms: PSF/MVS, PSF/VSE and PSF/VM (see Software Requirements section).

(#4120) SNA and TCP/IP Support for Token-Ring LANS

(For IBM US, No Longer Available as of October 18, 2002)

This feature allows connections to a Token-Ring LAN supporting IBM's System Network Architecture (SNA) protocol. Currently, the InfoPrint allows the printer to attach to Token-Ring LANs running the TCP/IP protocol using feature 4120. The new printer can attach to either a 4 Megabit per second (Mbps) or 16 Mbps Token-Ring LAN.

The new feature 4120 can only be installed on printers with serial numbers at or above those listed in the Key Prerequisites section.

A Token-Ring adapter cable, P/N 60G1066, is included with this feature.

SNA/Token-Ring is supported on the following software platforms: PSF/MVS, PSF/VSE, PSF/VM, and PSF/400 (see Software Requirements section).

These features can only be installed on printers having serial numbers at or above those listed below.

  • Serial numbers 01-40200 - EMEA (Shipped by ILC Amsterdam)
  • Serial numbers 01-30400 - US/Canada/LA (Shipped by Endicott)
  • Serial numbers 97-00020 - AP (Shipped by Fujisawa)
(#4161) TCP/IP Ethernet Attachment - 10BaseT

The maximum number orderable for this feature is one. The InfoPrint 60 ca only support one active attachment - FC #4120, FC #4161,or FC #4162. FC #4161 is a priced feature code. Should the customer need to change attachment for the InfoPrint 60 at a later date this can be accomplished by ordering one of these attachments as an MES for field installation.

(#4162) TCP/IP Ethernet Attachment - 10Base2

The maximum number orderable for this feature is one. The InfoPrint 60 can only support one active attachment - FC #4120, FC #4161, or FC #4162. FC #4162 is a priced feature code. Should the customer need to change attachment for the InfoPrint 60 at a later date this can be accomplished by ordering one of these attachments as an MES for field installation.

(#4164) 100BaseTX Ethernet (Factory) (#4165) 100BaseTX Ethernet (Field)

This attachment feature for the IBM Infoprint 60 supports the following LANs:

  • 10BaseT Ethernet LAN using category 3/4/5 Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) with an RJ-45 connector
  • 100BaseTX Ethernet LAN using category 5 Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) with an RJ-45 connector

This feature provides a native attachment to a LAN via Ethernet (TCP/IP). The attachment can be either 10 Mbps (10 million bits per second) or 100 Mbps (100 million bits per second) enabled. This interface will automatically sense and emulate the data rate and transfer mode (half duplex or full duplex) of the Ethernet hub, or it can be manually set to match data rate and transfer mode.

This provides the advantages of transferring data at a faster rate which can result in better printer throughput and overall system performance.

The Infoprint 60 can have only one Ethernet adapter installed. If the 10Base2 Ethernet adapter is already installed (feature number 4162) and the 10/100BaseTX Ethernet adapter (feature number 4164/4165) is ordered then the current adapter must be removed. If the printer has 10BaseT Ethernet (feature number 4161) already installed and the 10/100BaseTX feature is ordered, the current feature will stay in the printer but will not be usable.

Limitations: The Ethernet 10/100BaseTX feature is not supported on Infoprint 60s with PCL installed. Therefore, feature numbers 4164/4165 are mutually exclusive with PCL feature numbers 4820/4821 and PCL RPQs 8B4474/8B4475.

Cabling: The cabling must meet specifications in ANSI/IEEE 802.3a, b, c and e. The building cabling must conform to EIA-569 standard, which specifies that the cable should be away from an EMI source. Some excerpts from the standard state minimum distance from:

  • Transformers and electric motors - 40 in (101.6 cm)
  • Unshielded power lines of 480 Volts or less or electrical equipment in proximity to open or non-metal pathways - 24 in (61.0 cm)
  • Power lines enclosed in a grounded metal conduit in proximity to grounded metal conduit pathway - 12 in (30.5 cm)
  • Fluorescent lighting - 12 in (30.5 cm)
RAM Memory Expansion Features

The memory features are available for field installation by customer engineering. Feature codes 4332 and 4364 are not customer setup features. There are no compatibility conflicts for these feature and they do not require additional cables. These features are available as factory installed features or MESs for field installation.

(#4332) 32MB RAM Memory Expansion for Performance Enhancement (#4364) 64MB RAM memory Expansion for Performance Enhancement

This feature is available as a factory orderable feature or as an MES for field installation by customer engineering. This is a priced feature code.

(#4555) Variable Size Paper (Plant) (#4556) Variable Size Paper (Field)

Summary: The Variable Size Paper feature (FC 4555 and 4556) provides added application flexibility for our customers. Customers can now take advantage of printing on any size paper from 7.0 inches (178mm) X 7.48 inches (190mm) up through 11.69 inches (297mm) X 17.0 inches (432mm) in the 500 sheet input trays.

The customer defines their paper sizes to the printer console by using the SETUP/DEFINE FORMS menu. Values may be entered in either inches or millimeters, but units may not be mixed. As with standard sized papers, the paper in the input tray must match the form size selected from the panel.

The customer would also adjust the paper side guide in the 500 sheet input trays. The paper side guide, which is movable to any position between 7.48 inches and 11.69 inches will be adapted to the two 500 sheet input trays for width adjustments.

Technical Description: Enhanced capability to print on any size paper from 7. 0 inches (178mm) X 7.48 inches (190mm) up through 11.69 inches (297mm) X 17.0 inches (432mm) is now offered on the InfoPrint 60 and 3160-001 Advanced Function Printers.

A paper side guide which is movable to any position between 7.48 inches and 11.69 inches will be adapted to the two 500 sheet input trays for width adjustments. A microcode change permits adjustment in the feed direction (or Length) from 7.0 inches to 17.0 inches. The main 2000 sheet input tray offers the same range of length adjustment, but must still use the fixed side guide stops at 8.6 inches (216mm), 10.12 inches (257mm), 11.0 inches (279mm), and 11.69 inches (297mm).

Paper sizes with widths greater then 11.69 inches (297mm) must be rotated in the input tray to print, and the maximum print speed will be 30 ppm. Paper sizes longer than 8.6 inches (218mm) in the feed direction (length) will also print at a maximum of 30 ppm.

Custom paper sizes are defined to the printer through the SETUP/DEFINE FORMS menu on the control panel. Values may be entered in inches or millimeters, but units may not be mixed. The paper size loaded in an input tray must match the form size selected from the panel.

A special feature of the Variable Size Paper feature is the ability to feed and print on notebook divider TABs. When feeding TABs, the paper length may be set from 8.6 inches (218mm) to 15.0 inches (381mm) including the TAB dimension. The TAB itself may be up to .7 inches (18mm) in depth. For example, a typical U.S. notebook divider TAB adds 0.5 inches to 8.5 X 11.0 inch paper for a combined overall size of 9.0 X 11.0 inches.

TABs may be fed and printed on plain Index Tab Stock from 90 to 110 pound weights in the main 2000 sheet input tray or the 500 sheet input trays in Simplex mode only.

Maximum Number of Features: One. Prerequisites: None. Corequisites: None. Compatibility Conflicts: None. Customer Setup: No. Field Installable: Yes. Cable Order: None.

Limitations: Paper sizes with widths greater then 11.69 inches (297mm) must be rotated in the 500 sheet input tray(s) to print, the maximum speed will be 30 ppm. Paper sizes longer than 8.6 inches (218mm) in length or feed direction will also print at a maximum speed of 30 ppm.

TABs may be fed and printed on plain Index Tab Stock from 90 to 110 pound weights in simplex mode only.

Using the variable size paper feature will affect throughput performance because the printer pauses to clear the paper path prior to picking a new custom size paper.

The effect will be minimal when using a single custom size paper in combination with standard size papers.

When sequencing two or three custom size papers in the same job, throughput performance will vary considerably.

(#4620, #4621) 3000 Sheet Side Stacker

This feature is available as a factory orderable feature (FC #4620) or an an MES for field installation by customer engineering (FC #4621). The maximum number orderable for either of these feature codes is one. The feature codes are mutually exclusive. Either feature code replaces the standard 1500 sheet output stacker with a 3,000 sheet output capacity stacker. These are priced feature codes.

This feature requires 128 MB of memory. If necessary, install the 64 MB memory upgrade (feature number 4364).

In addition to the above prerequisites, the PCL feature will have the following limitations:

  • PCL will only be supported on TCP/IP Token-Ring and/or TCP/IP Ethernet attachments.
  • IPDS is supported on all of the available attachments for the Infoprint 60, but IPDS can only be enabled on one attachment at any given time.
  • Up to three active attachments can be configured on an Infoprint 60 with this feature as long as one of them is the 10BaseT (Ethernet) attachment. Otherwise, up to two attachments are supported.
  • Double Byte Character Set (DBCS) is not supported.

This feature is mutually exclusive with:

  • The Infoprint 60 finisher, feature numbers 4640 and 4641
  • The Infoprint 60 variable paper size, feature numbers 4555 and 4556 or RPQ 8B4469.
(#9986) 6 Foot (1.8 M) Power Cord

This feature is made available for customers (Chicago) who require a 6 foot (1.8 M) external AC power cord instead of the standard 11 foot (3.35 M) power cord. This is not a customer set-up feature. There are compatibility conflicts for this feature and it does not require additional cables. The maximum number orderable for this feature is one. This feature is available as a factory ordered feature only.

Supplies

Choosing the right supplies is very important with the IBM InfoPrint 60. For optimum print quality and performance reliability, the use of IBM supplies is recommended. Supplies are purchase-only items. The customer is responsible for ordering and maintaining an adequate stock of supplies. When a customer purchases an InfoPrint 60, an IBM printing specialist should give the customer a list of the alternative ways to order supplies. Additionally, the specialist should advise the customer to order supplies immediately and suggest they establish a supply agreement (many Authorized Supplies Dealers offer supply agreements). A supply agreement usually provides a customer with price discounts, price protection for one year, creation of a shipping schedule and reduces administrative expenses.

Supply Specifications

The approximate average yields are not a warranty or guarantee of minimum life, and are provided to assist in initial supplies planning. Actual usage should be used to establish the supply's life in your environment. Many factors (for example, print coverage per page, paper type and size, machine and environmental conditions) can affect yield.

Warranty for all supplies is one year from the date of purchase stated on the purchase receipt. Supply warranties are only for defects in materials and workmanship at the time of shipment and are not for normal wear and tear. If you believe you are due a warranty return, return the supply in its original package or a package from the replacement supply to the point of purchase with an explanation of the problem and the approximate number of prints run on the supply.

For additional information on ordering supplies, see the IBM InfoPrint 60; 3160 AF Printer Introduction and Planning Guide (G544-5242).

The IBM InfoPrint 60 is shipped with the following customer replaceable supplies:
