Model Abstract 9068-S01

The IBM 9068 Multi-Purpose Passbook printer is a 24-wire compact desktop printer for the Financial Services Industry that offers improved functions, performance, and usability. The 9068 prints on a variety of print media with a variety of sizes and thicknesses commonly used in financial institutions.

The IBM 9068 Model S01 supports IBM 4722 compatible datastream which makes it compatible, in general, with the IBM 9055-2, the IBM 4009, the IBM 4722, and IBM 4772. The personal computers supported by IBM 9068-S01 are IBM PC, APTIVA, PS/2, and PS/Value Point.

The IBM 9068 Model S01 is a model for customers who primarily uses alpha-numeric characters. It supports character pitches of 10, 12, 15, and 17.1 cpi and variable pitch. Line pitches supported are 5, 6 lpi and incremental spacing. The code pages supported are 437, 850, 851, 852, 855, 857, 860, 862, 863, 864, 865, 866, 868, 869, and 874. For Hong Kong, the code pages supported are 437, 850, and PRC code pages.

IBM 9068 provides improved price/performance.

Utilizes a 24-wire dot impact print head.

Prints on variety of print media which are commonly used in financial institutions.

Model Highlights 9068-S01

Attaches to personal computers via serial port (base) or optional parallel port or to IBM 4700 system via the optional B-Loop.

Provides auto document alignment mechanism to improve ease of operation.

Available in compact size and flat top cover thus allowing more freedom in layout of operator workstation and saving space.

Provides quiet operation -- better work environment for operators.

Provides optional Read Encode Magnetic Stripe Feature to reduce operational steps for operators and chance of human error.

Upwardly compatible with the IBM 4722 and IBM 4772 and the IBM 4748 and IBM 9055 and the IBM 4009 -- protects customer investment in application program and enables smooth migration.

Provides optional B-Loop Attachment Feature -- allows migration from 4700 system environment to PC based system environment without replacing printers.

Provides capability for printer sharing by two operators. Optional Multi-User Operator Panel further enhances this capability (model S01).

Provides high speed printing at maximum burst speed of 320 cps in 12 cpi pitch.

The 9068 offers improved price/performance through the blending and balancing of latest in high technology and know-how in well-established technology areas. It offers functions, performance, and usability improvements previously available only on high-function printers at a price of entry-level printers.

The 9068 is capable of handling a variety of print media (horizontal and vertical fold passbooks, multipart cutforms, envelopes, etc.) with variety of size and thickness. This makes the 9068 an ideal component to configure operator workstation at a branch office of financial institutions.

The auto document alignment mechanism of the 9068 allows accurate print positioning especially on documents that are roughly aligned at the time of document insertion. This allows operators to pay minimum attention to document alignment when operating 9068 and improves the work environment for the operator.

Furthermore, this feature along with other ease-of-use features of 9068 requires less skill on the part of the operator in performing printing tasks. More importantly, this feature allows financial institutions to cut cost which would otherwise be spent in hiring skilled operators or in the training of unskilled operators.

The flat top cover allows light objects to be placed on top of 9068. This allows greater flexibility in the layout of components within the operator workstation. This combined with the compact size of 9068 with integrated power unit will allow financial institutions to configure operator workstation with less space than was previously required with similar products.

The maximum load which can be placed on top of 9068 varies depending on the size and shape of the object. However, IBM advises that for objects that exceed 15 kg might have an adverse effect on the operation of 9068 and should be tested prior to installation.

The quiet operation (<55dB) of 9068 provides a better work environment for the operator and other workers at a branch office. It will not interrupt operator conversation with a client in carrying out sales, consultation, etc., at a branch office.

The Optional built-in Read Encode Magnetic Stripe (REMS) feature reduces operational step for operators in hand-swiping passbooks through a magnetic stripe reader. Furthermore, it reduces the burden on the operator by avoiding errors such as printing on a wrong passbook.

REMS feature is used to obtain essential account information, such as account number, etc. from the magnetic stripe of a passbook. The data obtained is typically used to communicate with the host system in updating the master database for that account as a result of transaction processed at the branch. Errors usually occur when using a separate hand-swipe magnetic stripe reader unit because the integrity of passbook operation depends heavily on operator precaution while handling the passbook. Chances exist where a passbook from which the magnetic stripe data is read may not be the same passbook that was inserted into the printer for printing. A built-in REMS feature on 9068 eliminates this possibility.

The 9068 protects the customer investment in application programming by keeping datastream and commands upwardly compatible with the IBM 4009, the IBM 9055-2, IBM 4722 and IBM 4772 as IBM 4722 compatible machine (Model S01). The Model D01 is upwardly compatible with the IBM 4748 and IBM 9055-1 as IBM 4748 compatible machine.

The 9068 can be operated under application programs written for these printers without modification or recompilation. Customers currently using these printers can enjoy the enhanced capabilities of 9068 by simply replacing it with 9068. This allows customers with limited budget to plan smooth and gradual migration without investing additional money on existing programming. It should be noted, however, that minor limitations exist to the compatibility. Respective Planning and Programming Guide should be consulted for more details.

The B-Loop Attachment Feature allows smooth migration from 4700 system to personal computer-based system by supporting use of 9068 under both environments (either one at a time). Customers can extend their investment over period of time by first replacing all the 4700 printers with 9068 and at a later date, and replace the 4700 controllers with personal computers.

Two operators can share the same 9068. This shared use allows customers to reduce machine investment required for each operator. To support printer sharing, the optional REMS feature makes the 9068 capable of checking operational integrity by identifying the passbooks inserted from its magnetic stripe content.

The optional Multi User Operator Panel further enhances this shared use capability by allowing use by more than two operators (model S01).

The 9068 supports high speed printing at maximum burst speed of 320 characters per second in 12 characters per inch pitch when using super draft print mode. The high speed print capability allows operator to minimize time spent in waiting for print operation to complete, whereby improving the efficiency of the operator.

Product Positioning

The 9068 is an entry level passbook and cutform printer. It is positioned as a follow on of IBM 4722 Document Printer (Model S01) and IBM 4748 Document Printer (Model D01). It offers price/performance advantage over high function printers such as the IBM 4009 and the IBM 9055 and the IBM 4772 printers in satisfying the printing needs for processing transactions at a branch office of financial institution.

Maximum

One IBM 9068 may be connected to a serial port or parallel port of a PC. Multiple IBM 9068 may be connected to a PC with multiple serial ports. Maximum number of serial ports supported depends on the device driver used to attach IBM 9068. When using the device driver provided by the feature 6001, maximum of eight 9068 (four for Model D01) can be attached to a system unit with OS/2 and maximum of four can be attached to a system unit with DOS, Windows NT, or Windows 95. In any of the above cases, standard serial RS232 ports must be available on the system unit to match the number of 9068.

The number of IBM 9068 that can be attached to IBM 4702 via B-Loop depends on the maximum aggregate baud rate, available slot on the loop, and modulus.

Envelopes with maximum width 235 mm and maximum length 152.4 mm are supported for printing within the print span.

Attachment

9068 supports 8-bit ASCII data stream with ESX escape sequence for Model D01 and ESC escape sequence for Model S01. Both models support bidirectional asynchronous serial communication with the system unit at speed up to 19200 bps. Customers can optionally select Parallel Attachment Feature or B-Loop Attachment Feature as alternatives to serial attachment. Parallel Attachment Feature supports unidirectional PC Parallel communication with the system unit instead of the serial communication.
