IBM 4400 Attachment Summary

The following table shows the allowable combinations of attachments for an IBM 4400 Printer.
The parallel port and the serial port are standard on the IBM 4400 when no other attachment features are chosen. However, when any 10/100 Ethernet feature (#4177, 4178, 5177, 5178) or Wireless Ethernet (# 4277, 4377, 4278, 4378) is chosen, the Parallel Port cannot be used since these Ethernet adapters remove the parallel port.
The serial port is always available regardless of attachment features.

The table shows:

  • The Coax/Twinax Adapter (#4830, 4835) can be installed with the 10/100 Ethernet features (#4177, 4178, 5177, 5178).
  • The Coax/Twinax Adapter (#4830, 4835) cannot be installed with either of the Wireless Ethernet Adapters.

The following is a summary of the IBM 4400 features A complete description of each feature follows the "Chargeable Features" Table later in this document.

Ethernet 10/100 BaseT NIC(#4177, 4178)

The Ethernet 10/100 BaseT NIC Adapter is available for new IBM 4400 printers, and for upgrades of existing IBM 4400 Models 004 printers.
The Ethernet 10/100 BaseT NIC is an internal adapter that connects the printer to an Ethernet network using TCP/IP, NetBIOS TCP/IP, and IPX.
The ASCII parallel interface is replaced by this Ethernet NIC.

When this adapter is to be used for IPDS, feature numbers 4862 or 4867 (IPDS for Twinax or Ethernet NIC) are also required.

The adapter provides the capability to provide printer status information via a Web page when the printer's IP address is supplied to a standard Web browser. This is in addition to the function provided by the 4400 Printer Management Utility.

Lucent Wireless Ethernet (#4377, 4378)

The Lucent Wireless Ethernet attachment card (#4377, 4378) provides support for either wireless or standard Ethernet cable connections. This adapter card is compliant with IEEE 802.11b Wi-Fi.

Wireless operation requires that the customer obtain a Proxim (Lucent) Orinoco World Silver or Gold PCMCIA radio card. A dipole rubber duck antenna is included with this feature.

The Wireless Ethernet installation removes the parallel port, so the parallel port cannot be used when this feature is installed. Also, none the following adapters can be installed when this feature is installed:

  • Coax/Twinax attachment feature (#4830, 4835),
  • 10/100 BaseT Ethernet adapter (#4177, 4178),
  • Cisco Wireless Ethernet adapter (#4277, 4278)
  • Basic Ethernet adapter (#5177, 5178)
  • Cisco Wireless Ethernet(#4277, 4278)

The Cisco Wireless Ethernet attachment card (#4277, 4278) provides support for either wireless or standard Ethernet cable connections. This adapter card is compliant with IEEE 802.11b Wi-Fi.

Wireless operation requires that the customer obtain a Cisco Aironet AIR-352 PCMCIA adapter card. A dipole rubber duck antenna is included with this feature.

The Wireless Ethernet installation removes the parallel port, so the parallel port cannot be used when this feature is installed. Also, none the following adapters can be installed when this feature is installed:

  • Coax/Twinax attachment feature (#4830 or #4835),
  • 10/100 BaseT Ethernet adapter (#4177, 4178),
  • Lucent Wireless Ethernet adapter (#4377, 4378)
  • Basic Ethernet adapter (#5177, 5178)
Configuration Restrictions to Field-Install Wireless Ethernet Features

The Wireless Ethernet MES features (#4278, #4378) cannot be installed on certain IBM 4400 printers manufactured prior to February 2003. These features can only be installed on IBM 4400 printers with the following serial numbers.

For any model 4400 printer with a serial number starting with "011", the serial number must be 0111171 or greater.
For Model 004 printers with a serial number beginning with "010", the serial number must be 0103552 or higher.
For Model 006 printers with a serial number beginning with "010", the serial number must be 0103791 or higher.
For Model 008 printers with a serial number beginning with "010", the serial number must be 0103785 or higher.
Printers not within the serial numbers listed above cannot be re-worked to accept the Wireless Ethernet features.

Coax/Twinax Interface (#4830, #4835)

The Coax/Twinax attachment provides the addition of both a coax and a twinax interface, in addition to the ASCII Serial/Parallel interface. This provides support for ASCII, IGP, Code V, and Coax/Twinax emulations. It also is a prerequisite for the IPDS for Twinax or Ethernet NIC (#4862 or #4867) when the Twinax attachment will be used in IPDS mode.

Basic 10/100 Ethernet Network Interface Card (#5177, 51278)

The Basic Ethernet NIC offers a lower priced alternative to the 10/100 Ethernet NIC (#4177, #4178).
The following function available with the current 10/100 Ethernet adapter (#4177, 4178) is not available with the basic adapter:

  • IPDS Data Stream Support
  • Printer Management Utility (PMU) Support
  • Bi-directional communication between the printer and the network adapter is not supported so that the printer operator panel cannot be used for network configuration.
  • SNMP Support
  • Novell Netware support
  • Printer alerts
  • Web page support
  • Ability to automatically load a printer configuration based on the printer queue
Telnet/5250 Support (RPQ #8B4355).

This adapter cannot be installed with the Ethernet 10/100 Adapter (#4177, #4178).
Since the Basic Ethernet adapter is not detected by the printer, the Basic Ethernet configuration menu is not available through the IBM 4400 printer control panel.

An Ethernet configuration utility must be used to set the configuration parameters options and the IP address. A utility is available by selecting "thermal" and then "4400" at the IBM Printer web site for downloading drivers and utilities. The address of this web site to download this utility is:
http://www.printers.ibm.com/R5PSC.NSF/web/download

Other configuration utilities such as bootp and arp can also be used to configure the Basic Ethernet NIC.

Intelligent Printer Data Stream (IPDS) for Twinax or Ethernet Network Interface Card (NIC) (#4862, #4867)

This feature provides capability to support IPDS printing for printers attached to an Ethernet LAN (with feature numbers 4177 or 4178) or attached by Twinax (with feature numbers 4830 or 4835).

IPDS allows print pages containing an unlimited mix of different types of data: high-quality text, images, vector graphics, and bar codes.

IPDS support is provided on the following platforms:

  • PSF/400 V4.3 or later
  • PSF for OS/390 V3.1 or later
  • Infoprint Manager for AIX V3.2 or later
  • Infoprint Manager NT V 1.1 or later
  • PSF/MVS V2.2.0
  • PSF/VSE V2.2 .1

Prerequisites for the IPDS feature are the 300 DPI printhead and the Additional Memory Feature.

The IPDS feature is only available for field installation on IBM 4400 printers with serial #0101000 and above.

Legacy Migration Utility-1 (#4870, 4871, 4882, 4883, 4884, 4885)

The Legacy Migration Utility-1 (LMU-1) is an interpreter developed for the IBM 4400 Thermal Printer that translates a set if existing Zebra Technology Corp ZPL-II (TM) graphics language commands into IBM 4400 printer language.

Detailed command information is available in the IBM 4400 User's Legacy Migration Utility-1 User's Guide Addendum (G544-5796).

Normally Code V and IGP are standard on an IBM 4400. When the LMU-1 feature is ordered, either Code V or IGP, but not both, can be present on an IBM 4400. Also, different IPDS features must be specified depending on the presence of LMU-1, IGP, and Code V.

For initial orders, the following feature codes are available:
(#4870) LMU-1 with IGP (Initial Order) This feature provides the Legacy Migration Utility-1 with IGP.
(#4871) LMU-1 with Code V (Initial Order) This feature provides the Legacy Migration Utility-1 with Code V.

For MES orders for installed machines, different feature codes must be used depending on the features already installed on the IBM 4400. These feature codes are:

  • LMU-1 with IGP (Telnet Not Installed) - Mes (#4882)
  • LMU-1 with IGP (Telnet installed) - Mes (#4883)
  • LMU-1 with Code V (Telnet Not Installed) - Mes (#4884)
  • LMU-1 with Code V (Telnet installed) - Mes (#4885)
Legacy Migration Utility - 2

The Legacy Migration Utility - 2 (LMU-2) provides support for emulation of TEC printers. This interpreter is compatible with the following TEC printers:
Tec B372, B472, B482, B572, B672, B682, B872, B882

Telnet 3270e/5250e (#4520, 4530, 4531, 4532, 4890, 4891, 4892, 4893)

The Telnet 3270e/5250e feature allows printing currently being performed with coax/twinax attached printers to be migrated easily to network attached printers, without changing the existing application.

This feature must be used with one of the following adapters:
10/100 BaseT Ethernet adapter (#4177, 4178)
Cisco Wireless Ethernet (#4277, 4278)
Lucent Wireless Ethernet (#4377, 4378)

The Telnet feature cannot be used with any IPDS feature or the Coax/Twinax adapter, or the Basic Ethernet Adapter (#5177, 5178)

Bar Code Validator (#5610, #5611)

The Bar Code Validator is an external device that attaches near the paper exit of the printer. It scans the printed output for bar codes, and monitors bar code quality. After a bar code passes the scan beam, the Validator grades it and sends a report back to the printer. The printer response is determined by the Validator settings. A 1/2-inch distance between bar codes is required when the Validator is used. The Validator feature only applies to picket fence (vertical bars) bar codes. The Validator cannot be used to verify Ladder (horizontal bars) bar codes.

The maximum length of a bar code to be verified is approximately 6.5 inches (including approximately 0.25 inches for the quiet zone). This maximum length can vary depending on the bar code element width.
The Validator is only available for field installation on IBM 4400 printers with serial #0101000 and above.

Media Cutter (#7340, #7360, #7380, #7304, #7306, #7308)

The Media Cutter automatically cuts media after each label is printed or via a software command to cut media after a specified number of labels are printed.

The Media Cutter (like the Validator) is only available for field installation on IBM 4400 printers with serial #0101000 and above.

Media/Label Cutter Tray (#7330, #7341, #7361, #7381)

This option is used exclusively with the media cutter option to catch the cut media and collect it away from the Media Cutter Assembly. This feature is only available when the Media Cutter is installed.

300 DPI Printhead (#3500)

This feature provides a 300-DPI printhead on initial orders for a Model 004. A 203-DPI Printhead is provided on initial orders if feature number 3500 is not ordered.

Additional Memory

This feature increases the DRAM and Flash memory from 4 MB Flash and 8 MB DRAM to a total of 10 MB Flash memory and 16 MB DRAM memory to support printing of label media lengths up to a maximum of 99 inches.

Peel and Rewind Feature

The Peel and Rewind feature is available as an optional feature for the IBM 4400 Models 004, 006, and 008. This features enables the following modes of operation:

Peel-Off Mode

In Peel-Off Mode the printer unwinds the dye-cut media from the supply spindle, prints the label, automatically peels the label from the media carrier (label backing) and leaves the peeled label at the mouth of the printer. The printer then rewinds the waste label carrier (backing) onto the optional internal rewinder spindle. The label presentation sensor detects when the label has been removed, and the printer then retracts the media and prints the next label.

Batch Mode

Labels are printed and rewound onto a roll for later use.

This optional feature is now available for field installable.

The Peel and Rewind features cannot be used when the Media Cutter (FN 7340, 7304, 7360, 7306, 7380, or 7308) are installed.

Prior to this Announcement, the Rewinder function was included on all Models 006 and 008, and only available on the Model 004 as an initial order feature.

The Peel and Rewind features cannot be installed on the same printer as the Media Cutter features (FN 7340, 7360, 7380, 7304, 7306, or 7308).

Direct thermal media:
Direct thermal media is paper coated with special chemicals that act as an accelerator, acceptor dye, and binder. During direct thermal mode, the heat from the thermal printhead contacts the paper and causes a chemical reaction to take place.

Printheads:

The printhead must be replaced periodically, and new printheads are obtained as a supply item. The 300 DPI printhead may be ordered to upgrade a 203 DPI machine to 300 DPI.

Cleaning Pens

These items are supply items and, as such, are not available from IBM service or included in the warranty and maintenance service agreement.

The IBM 4400 Thermal Label Printer is designated a Customer Setup (CSU) machine. The Quick Start Guide contains the necessary instructions to enable the customer to set up and configure the printer.

Notes

Printhead:

The printer produces American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Grade A bar codes in both ladder and picket fence modes with both 203 DPI and 300 DPI resolution printheads. The nominal printhead dot size is 0.110 mm x 0.132 mm for 203 DPI and 0.0697 mm x 0.110 mm for 300 DPI.
Print Length The print lengths are a function of the DRAM memory supplied with the printer. The maximum label length is increased by the installation of the expansion memory (#5600 or #5601).

Media Handling Modes

The printer operates under two basic modes: batch and on-demand. Batch mode is used to print and collect labels for later use. On-demand mode is used in applications where labels will be used immediately after printing.

Batch Mode:

In batch mode, the printer unwinds the media from the media supply spindle and prints the labels.

Peel-Off Mode:

In Peel-Off Mode the printer unwinds the media from the supply spindle, prints the label, automatically peels the label from the media carrier web and leaves the peeled label at the mouth of the printer. The printer then rewinds the waste label carrier web onto the internal rewinder spindle. The label presentation sensor detects when the label has been removed, and the printer then retracts the media before printing the next label.

Tear-Off Mode:

In Tear-Off Mode, the printer unwinds the media from the supply spindle, prints the label, and leaves the label at the mouth of the printer (aligning the tear point over the tear-off bar). The label presentation sensor detects when the label has been removed, and the printer then retracts the media before printing the next label (to prevent the loss of a form).

Tear-Off Strip Mode:

In Tear-Off Strip Mode, the printer unwinds the media from the supply spindle and continues printing until the print buffer is empty. The printer then positions the last label for removal by aligning the tear point over the tear-off bar. The label presentation sensor can be used in the tear-off strip mode to detect when a label has been removed. When the printer buffer is again loaded, the printer will retract the media before resuming printing to prevent the loss of a form.

The printer then rewinds the waste label carrier web onto the internal rewinder spindle. The label presentation sensor detects when the label has been removed, and the printer then retracts the media before printing the next label.

Batch Mode:
In batch mode, the labels are wound to a spool after they are printed. The spooled labels can then be used at a later time and place. The maximum spool diameter is 5 inches.
