Current 4247 Network Print Server and IPDS LAN Attachment Capability

These Ethernet adapters provide a fully integrated Ethernet solution and normally will be the preferred Ethernet adapters.

Other LAN attachment capability is available via:

  • The Network Print Server features (#4121, #4124, #4164, #4165) provide network attachment via the parallel port for Token-Ring and Ethernet. The Network Print Servers plug into the printer parallel port. For Ethernet, the new Ethernet NIC features are installed in the 4247 expansion slot and the parallel port is still available. The Network Print Server and the above RPQs provide the capability for both LAN support and twinax, coax, or serial support on the same IBM 4247 Printer.
  • The I-Data 7913 (RPQ numbers 8B4313 and 8B4314) provides either Token-Ring or Ethernet LAN attachment for IPDS data for twinax and coax printers.

RPQ #8B4313 provides Token-Ring IPDS support. This RPQ is still required for IPDS Token-Ring. RPQ #8B4314 provides Ethernet IPDS support, and normally the Ethernet IPDS NIC, rather than this RPQ, will now be the preferred solution.

Neither of these RPQs can be installed when the Ethernet NIC features are installed.

While a Network Print Server and one of the I-Data 7913 RPQs (either RPQ 8B4313 or 8B4314) can both be installed on the same 4247-V03, only one of either the Network Print Server or the I-Data 7913 RPQ network attachments can be active at any time. Manual network switching between the ASCII (Network Print Server) and IPDS (I-Data RPQ) is required to switch between the attachments.

While a Network Print Server and one of the Ethernet 10/100 NICs can be installed on the same 4247, only one of either the Network Print Server or the Ethernet 10/100 BaseT NIC attachments can be active at any time. Manual switching between the ASCII (Network Print Server) and the IPDS Ethernet 10/100 BaseT NIC is required to switch between the attachments.

Replacement, Addition, and Installation of Attachment Cards for Installed Printers

These Ethernet adapters can replace installed adapters on installed IBM 4247 Model 003 and V03 Printers.

The following table shows the allowable replacements and additions of attachment cards for installed IBM 4247-V03 and 4247-003 Printers, and the feature to order to replace or add an adapter. All of these replacements and additions are easily installed by customers, and do not require IBM Field Engineering for installation.

IBM 4247-V03 Printer Stand

The IBM 4247-V03 Printer Stand has three main sections:

  • A flat table surface to hold the printer
  • An input paper tray to hold forms before they are fed through the printer
  • An output paper tray for stacking forms after they are printed

The table is designed specifically to support the features of the IBM 4247-V03, and since this stand accommodates the footprint and weight of the 4247-V03, printer vibration is minimized.

The printer stand was also designed to serve the characteristics of the 4247-V03 printer. The stand accommodates two continuous forms and a separator in the front of the stand is used to ensure that the forms are kept separate.

When dual continuous forms are used, one form rests on the input paper tray and the other form rests on the floor underneath the input tray.

The printer stand is customer set-up and can be easily assembled in about 30 minutes.

The original higher-priced enclosed cabinet style printer stand (#4462) is still available.

The open printer stand is a lower priced printer stand option for the 4247-V03 printer. The present enclosed cabinet printer stand is still available. The open printer stand does not offer the refined appearance of the enclosed cabinet.

Bulk Order for Optional Features

For most products, the quantity of any feature that can be ordered is the same as the maximum number of the feature allowed per machine. Since the IBM 4247-003 and 4247-V03 features are now all customer setup (for 4247 Model 003 with Licensed Internal Code Level 6.05 or higher), in some cases it is desirable to bulk order certain features so that machines can be easily reconfigured by Business Partners and end users. Thus, for these MES features, the maximum order quantity is normally 10, which is greater than the maximum that can be installed on one printer.

The maximum number of initial-order attachment features that can be ordered is one. Use the MES feature numbers for bulk orders.

A procedure to determine the level of code installed in a printer is explained in the Supplementary information in this letter.

For easy identification of boxed printers that have code level 6.05 and higher, the printer part number printed on the box label has been changed from 01PXXXX to 75PXXXX (where XXXX can be any number). The 01PXXXX numbers were used on printers shipped prior to 6.05 code.

IBM 4247-003 Print Throughput Improvement

The print speed of the IBM 4247-003 has been improved slightly for models with internal base code level 6.05 and higher. The improved code provides approximately a 5% greater throughput performance.

Power Plug Adapter (#9801, 9802, 9803, 9804, 9805)

When attaching the Ethernet 10/100 BaseT Network Print Server (#4164) to the 4247 Printers, a Power Plug (Power adapter) is needed. One of the following Power Plugs must be ordered with each Network Print Server.

  • US Plug Type: #9801

These adapters, with the appropriate power plug, are required to furnish the correct voltage and plug into an electrical outltd widthet for the 10/100 BaseT Network Print Server (#4164). These adapters plug into an electrical outlet and transform the voltage to the voltage required by the Ethernet Network Print Server (FN 4164).

The IBM 4247-V03 is a professional industrial printer that offers a faster print speed and a more rugged design than the current IBM 4247 models of serial matrix printers.

The 4247-V03 and all features are customer setup.

Limitations

The 4247-V03 has the following limitations:

  • Fast Draft print quality mode supports printing at 10 characters per inch only. DP, DP Text, and NLQ print quality modes support 10, 12, 15, 16.7, 17.1 and 20 characters per inch.
  • The front continuous forms paper path will handle up to 8-part forms. Forms greater than 4-part should be tested for readability prior to use.
  • No automatic sheet feed feature is available.
  • The following ASCII restrictions apply when using IBM 4247 native escape commands to print barcode:
    • Current barcode applications that use barcode escape commands must be modified to use IBM 4247 native barcode commands.
    • Barcode printing is limited to picket orientation and 3 to 1 wide to narrow ratio when printed using native 4247 escape commands.

The 4247-V03 has the following additional limitations when emulating previous ASCII printers:

  • The following commands and functions are not supported when replacing or adding to an existing IBM 4224 (Model 301, 302, 3E3), 4230 (Model 4xx or 5xx), or 4232 Model 302:
    • Begin/End Overstrike
    • Begin/End Understrike
    • Select Presentation Media
    • Set Presentation Position
    • Initialize/Delete Local Font
    • Select Local Character Set
    • Set Vertical Units
    • Graphic Segment List
    • Barcode
    • Segment
    • Overlays
    • Graphic Mapping Control
    • Read Printer Status
  • The following functions are not supported when using the Epson FX 1050 driver, IBM 4202 Proprinter III XL, or IBM 2381 driver in OS/2 or Windows:
    • Barcode selection or printing
    • Load/park form paths
    • Data-stream emulation switching
    • Metric vertical line spacing
  • The 4247-V03 does not support the following 4247-A00 operator panel settings:
    • Characters per inch (pitch) = 5, 6, 7.5, 8.5, proportional.
    • Lines per inch (lpi) = 12, 3L/30mm, 84L/30mm, 6L/30mm, 8L/30mm, 12L/mm.
    • Maximum page length for cut sheet forms = A5, A4, A3, LGL, LTR.
    • Parallel interface = 1284 nibble.(1)
    • Data bits = 7.
    • Left margin alignment = 0 to 13.4 inches. (Model 003 left margin alignment is 0 to 1.875 inches.)
    • Top margin (top of form) = 0 to 660 lines.(2)
    • Impact = soft, strong.(3)

Note: (1) Setting id is non-functional on A00.

Note: (2) Paper load position range is -0.166 (-24/144) to 2 (+288/144) inches. To set top of form to larger values, the user must move form and press top-of-form key.

Note: (3) Impact force is always set to strong.

Paper Handling

  • Continuous Forms:
    • The 4247-V03 will handle up to 8-part continuous forms in either front paper path.
  • For the Front Tractor Paths:
    • Form weight can range from 56 grams per square meter (gsm) (15 lb) to 150 gsm (40 lb). Paper weights outside this range must be tested by the customer for proper operation.
    • Overall (total) form thickness for all parts may range from 0.08 mm (0.003 in) to 0.64 mm (0.025 in).

The following forms widths and lengths are supported:

  • Form width from 76.2 mm (3 in) to 431.8 mm (17 in)
  • Form lengths from 76.2 mm (3 in) to 609.6 mm (24 in)

Forms less than 152.4 mm (6 in) in length or width should be tested for satisfactory stacking and may require operator assistance.

Software Requirements
