2074-003 IBM Console Support Controller Model 003

The IBM 2074 Console Support Controller is a Multiple Image Facility (MIF)-capable console support controller with increased support for consoles running TN3270E emulation.

Model Abstract 2074-003

The IBM 2074 Console Support Controller Model 003 is a Multiple Image Facility (MIF)-capable console support controller with increased support for up to 2 ESCON interfaces. It supports non-SNA, Distributed Function Terminal (DFT) data streams for "modern" terminal attachment. Because it is "MIF-capable", multiple systems and LPARs can simultaneously have 3270 sessions routed through one IBM 2074 Model 3.

Highlights
  • Replaces the console support functions of the IBM 3174 Establishment Controller.
  • Is shipped with an integrated ESCON adapter with an option for a second ESCON adapter, both of which connect to a host, via a direct ESCON channel, via an ESCON Director, or with a FICON Bridge.
  • Provides integrated Optical Media Attach (OMA) support, which can be used to load z/VM distribution tapes (on CD-ROM in OMA format) onto IBM eSeries zSeries servers.
  • Converts 3270 non-SNA, Distributed Function Terminal (DFT) ESCON data streams into LAN-based TN3270E data streams.
  • Is used as a S/390 or zSeries system console and operating system console.
  • Connects to client PCs with Ethernet or token ring.

Model Highlights 2074-003

  • One 2074 Model 3 can replace multiple 3174s.
  • The IBM 2074 Model 3 Console Support Controller Replaces the IBM 2074 Model 2 and increases the number of supported sessions to 96 per controller.
Description

The IBM 2074 Model 3 is a control unit that connects to a host via a direct ESCON channel, via an ESCON Director, or with a FICON** Bridge. It connects to client PCs with:

  • Ethernet
  • Token ring

With the IBM 2074 Model 3 you can benefit from:

  • Support for up to two ESCON interfaces
  • Support for Multiple Image Facility (MIF)
  • Optical Media Attach (OMA) media distribution for VM/ESA and z/VM
  • Remote consoles connected via TCP/IP network
  • Consolidation of console support boxes, which can increase available floor space

The IBM 2074 Model 3 Console Support Controller connects to a host, via a direct ESCON channel, via an ESCON Director, or with a FICON Bridge. The IBM 2074 Model 3 connects to client console PCs running TN3270E emulation and attached to Ethernet or token-ring LANs. The Model 3 provides support of non-SNA, DFT data streams to help enable current and past operating systems to function if the 3174, 2074-001, or 2074-002 are no longer available. One Model 3 can replace multiple 3174s or 2074 Model 1s and 2s, depending on setup and use.

If you are replacing multiple 3174s, you should purchase at least two IBM 2074 Model 3 Console Support controllers to avoid creating a single point-of-failure.

As the replacement for the console support function of the 3174 Establishment Controller and the 2074 Model 1 and 2 Console Support Controller, the IBM 2074 Model 3 Console Support Controller can be used as a zSeries, S/390 system console, and operating system console.

The IBM 2074 Model 3 is a protocol converter that transforms 3270 non-SNA, DFT ESCON data streams into LAN-based TN3270E data streams.

The IBM 2074 Model 3 is shipped with one integrated ESCON adapter card and has an optional second ESCON adapter card feature. Each ESCON adapter can handle up to 48-console sessions for a total of 96-console sessions per IBM 2074 Model 3, as well as directly connecting to one or two Central Electronics Complex (CEC) system attachments. With the use of an ESCON Director, one IBM 2074 Model 3 can attach to 96 different CECs. Thus, one 2074 Model 3 Console Support Controller can manage up to 96 LPARs or system images.

If you are replacing multiple 3174s, you should purchase at least two 2074 Model 3 Console Support Controllers to avoid creating a single point-of-failure. There is no multi-path support with the 2074 Model 3. Although there are two ESCON cards and both can be attached to the same CEC, the IBM 2074 Model 3 cannot be configured so that the loss of one connection will nondisruptively switch sessions to the other ESCON adapter.

There is no model upgrade from a 2074 Model 2 to a 2074 Model 3.

The Model 3 OMA feature allows you to use software distributed in the OMA format. Some IBM software programs, for example, VM/ESA and z/VM, distribute installation and service in this format. The OMA feature is especially useful if you do not have tape drives that are compatible with the product's distribution media. The OMA feature is available for the 2074 Model 1 when that model is upgraded to 2074 Driver level 1.0.8 or higher.

OMA competes with 2074 resources devoted to 3270 console I/O. It is intended for installation and service and its use may need to be restricted to off-peak times to avoid performance problems.

Technical Description

The IBM 2074 Model 3 Console Support Controller supports one or two ESCON cards and four LAN's (2 Token Ring and 2 Ethernet). Up to forty eight (48) 3270 sessions can be configured for each ESCON adapter for a total of 96 sessions per IBM 2074 Model 3 controller. Normally sessions are routed out over the LAN but one session for each ESCON adapter can be configured on the IBM 2074 Model 3 display itself for debugging purposes.

The IBM 2074 Model 3 controller can be attached directly to the host or through a Director and it is MIF capable. While an individual session cannot be shared between LPARs a single IBM 2074 Model 3 controller can have sessions configured in different LPARs different CECs and on different channels. Attachment to a FICON** channel via an appropriately configured Director is also supported.

A single IBM 2074 Model 3 Console Support Controller can replace multiple ESCON attached 3174's or 2074 Model 1's & 2's. For example if a customer were running 15 z/OS LPARs on a system, then 15 3174 controllers would be required, one for each LPAR. With the IBM 2074 Model 3 Console Support Controller all 15 LPARs can run through one controller (unless more than 96 3270 sessions were needed).

It is recommended that at least 2 IBM 2074 Model 3 Console Support Controllers be installed (or one IBM 2074 Model 3 with back-up 3174's) to prevent having a single point of failure. TN3270E on the clients can be configured so that if an IBM 2074 Model 3 Console Support Controller system goes down the client sessions will automatically connect to a back-up IBM 2074 Model 3 Console Support Controller. This will be a disruptive change meaning that if a user were logged on to TSO he would get a new logo and have to logon again.

There is no multipath support in the IBM 2074 Model 3 Console Support Controller. Although there are two ESCON cards and both can be attached to the same CEC the IBM 2074 Model 3 Console Support Controller cannot be configured so that the loss of one connection will non-disruptively switch sessions to the other ESCON adapter. However a client could have two sessions connected to an IBM 2074 Model 3 Console Support Controller each through a different LAN adapter and each connected to the CEC through a different ESCON card.

CCW interpretation is done by the IBM 2074 Model 3 Console Support Controller. CCWs required for non-SNA support are emulated. This includes Read Buffer, Read Modified, Write, Erase Write, Erase Write Alternate Sense, Sense ID, and Write Structured Field. Errors in CCW interpretation/conversion may be indicative of a problem with the IBM 2074 Model 3 Console Controller. If such errors are encountered, have your IBM 2074 Model 3 serviced.

Order interpretation is done on the client workstation by the TN3270E Emulator.

IBM has tested the eNetwork Personal Communications V5.6 emulator running under Microsoft Windows XP** for compatibility, however there is no reason to believe that other compatible emulators will not work. Please contact the emulator product vendor directly for terms, conditions, prices and other product details related to such vendor's emulator. Errors in order interpretation are not characteristic of a problem with IBM 2074 Model 3 Console Support Controller, rather they are indicative of a problem with the emulator. If such a problem is encountered, please contact your emulator vendor. It is recommended that only emulators with support be used (e.g. Not "freeware" emulators).

Orders and CCWs are supported to allow console support for z/OS, z/OS.e, OS/390 (back to MVS/XA), VM/ESA, z/VM, VSE/ESA, and TPF. The IBM 2074 Model 3 Console Support Controller can be used for either an z/OS console or for a TSO session and it can support the above operating systems in any combination simultaneously.

Screen sizes are the province of the TN3270E emulator. The IBM 2074 Model 3 Console Support Controller itself just reports back to the operating system the screen size that the emulator says is configured on the client for that session. This is done via a Write Structured Field Query Reply. Currently emulators support 24x80 32x80, 43x80, and 27x132.

In general the 3270 data stream does not provide for specific device types but rather for device capabilities. The host doesn't see a 3278 or a 3279 it sees a device with or without color. It also doesn't see a 3278 model 2 3, 4, or 5, rather it sees a 24x80, 32x80 43x80, etc. display. IBM 2074 Model 3 Console Support Controller reports 7 colors for all TN3270E clients and returns the screen size supported on the client.

A custom CD-ROM with the IBM 2074 Model 3 Console Support Controller code is pre-loaded onto the IBM 2074 Model 3 hard drive. The customer must use the configuration utility to customize the box. The configuration utility is based on the MP3000 "EMIO configuration" utility AWSCFG. The following items must be customized :

  • LAN adapters
  • LAN adapter IP addresses
  • Definition of the 48 possible sessions on each ESCON adapter card:
    • the source definition on the ESCON side LPAR number unit address, port number, etc
    • the target definition for the client IP address and/or LUNAME
    • selectio of a device type for each session Display (3278), Printer (3287), or OMA Tape (3422)
  • TCP/IP port number definition for each ESCON adapter

The completed configuration should be saved on diskette. In case of a hard drive failure the CE will replace the hard drive and reload it from the CD-ROM. The customer configuration can then be loaded from the customer diskette created after customization was completed. If no diskette is available the customer will have to re-customize the controller.

Once configuration is complete the system must be rebooted for the changes to take affect. After that the system will automatically come live on a reboot unless the process is stopped manually from the keyboard and display attached to the IBM 2074 Model 3 controller.

Changing the configuration is disruptive. Changing the session definition requires all sessions on that ESCON adapter to be reset but does not affect the sessions on the other ESCON adapter. Changing IP addresses on the LAN may be disruptive if clients are connecting through those addresses. Changing frame type requires a reboot.

No specific run time management tools are provided.

Clients connect the IBM 2074 Model 3 controller based on the IP address of the adapters. They select the ESCON adapter by means of the TCP/IP port customized for that adapter and select a specific 3270 session such as LPAR number, Director port and address based on the LUNAME provided.

When a client session disconnects from the IBM 2074 Model 3 controller the IBM 2074 Model 3 sends the S/390 server an unsolicited "device end" to signal a change in status. This tells the operating system that the "3270" has been powered off/on and causes the operating system to disconnect the user.

Electromagnetic Compatibility

The IBM 2074 Model 3 will meet worldwide class "A" EMC requirements (such as FCC class A, CE Mark EMC requirements, CISPR 22 Class A, and VCCI class 1).

Power requirements

The IBM 2074 Model 3 needs the following nominal power:

  • 100-127 VAC 9A 50 Hz or 60 Hz
  • 200-240 VAC 4.5A 50 Hz or 60 Hz

Heat Output

The heat output in British thermal units (BTU) per hour is between 341 and 2600 BTU (100 to 760 watts/hour).

Limitations

The 2074 Model 3 supports only TN3270E clients.

Although there is a total of 96 TN3270E sessions available, only two of these sessions may be configured locally on the 2074s display itself and then only for debugging, not production purposes.

The 2074 Model 3 contains four LAN adapters, two of each kind. Two LAN adapters cannot be connected to the same subnet. OS/2 does not support load balancing. The multiple LAN adapters allow you to connect to four different subnets.

There is no multi-path support with the 2074 Model 3. Although there are two ESCON cards and both can be attached to the same CEC, the 2074 Model 3 cannot be configured so that the loss of one connection will nondisruptively switch sessions to the other ESCON adapter.

The use of a KVM sharing switch could complicate service issues, and might have to be removed to diagnose certain problems.

Hardware Requirements

A TN3270E emulator must be installed on each client console. Clients consoles should:

  • Be at least 500 MHz
  • Have 128 MB memory
  • Have accelerated graphics with at least 8 MB video memory

The use of a keyboard/video/mouse (KVM) sharing switch could complicate service issues, and might have to be removed to diagnose certain problems.

Each 2074 Model 3 must have a keyboard, mouse, and display attached at all times. If you are using a console switch, this function is provided when the active keyboard, mouse, and display are switched away.

Software Requirements

The 2074 Model 3 requires no specific S/390 or zSeries software. No user code will run on this box. The IBM 2074 Model 3 is compatible with existing 3270 data streams for z/OS, z/OS.e, OS/390 (back to MVS/XA), VM/ESA, z/VM, VSE/ESA, and TPF.

The 2074 Model 3 is shipped with a custom CD-ROM that is preloaded onto the 2074 Model 3 hard drive. The software on this CD-ROM is IBM Licensed Internal Code (LIC) and may only be used under the LIC license for operation of the 2074 Model 3 Console Support Controller.
